Hunting at my families property is always a rewarding experience. It being occupied consistently since 1790 by my family there is no shortage of finds and trash, literally multi signals per square foot. So after upgrading my equipment, I decided to use a smaller coil and work on separation. Being that I was pressed for time I decided to only dig strong silver targets.
My first hit was a Silver wedding band, followed by a 1914 dime... then it happened, I hit what I thought was the broken end off a silver spoon.. after wiping it and seeing STERLING in all caps on the back wiped the front to see "C Mc D" Knowing my family tree as well as I do.. I knew right away I was holding my Great Great Uncle Charles MacDonald's Clip. It is too small to be a money clip, it is also quite small to be a tie clip... even though they did wear some skinny ties back then. If anyone could tell me what this clips purpose might have been would be greatly appreciated. Although I was quite excited to rescue a long lost family artifact I continued to hunt hitting another silver ring and an 1920 dime. Much love to small coils!

Thanx for reading! HH!

Finds with known history are some of the best ones! Big congrats OneWetKnee !!!

I found out about the history of a gold engraved stick pin my detector had found, on showing it to one of my Uncles! He was so glad that I had found the pin that his Mother had lost back in 1939, he had spent three days looking for it! He was very happy that it was in the hands of a family member! He told me that it was made from a 5 $ gold piece by a jeweler for him.

Great story! My father and brothers often poke fun at detecting, when I handed him that clip it seemed to wipe the smirk off his face :) I think when it has a name or is known is stops being just "junk" to non detectors.

I think it's a paper clip, to keep track of papers on a desk. Google antique paper clip and there's pictures of some.00e285db14aa33b3bdb98e8f39928faa.webp

love that old clip

It's always great to hunt family property

Those dimes are in amazing shape! Thanks for sharing the story. :icon_thumleft:

Its amazing soil there, the high-ground seems to preserve everything. Square nails I find in the lower yard near the water are rusted gnarled up junk , but in the upper yard they come out like this..
