Hey all,

Just returning from a quick hunt on my day off. Is this a point, or a good faker? It was found on a site that produces. If it is, I’ve never found a slate point before!

Thanks and hope you all had a nice holiday.

It’s amazing how brittle they can be, and still be around today. You’re right, they must have been so much stronger than how we find them today.

What would you age a point like the one I found?

Well, as I said earlier, it's remindful of the Stark type from New England. But in the Mid Atlantic, it might be called a Morrow Mountain type 2. And that might depend if the shape of the stem is not affected by what looks like some amount of damage on the lower right corner as seen in your first photo. If the stem is in more or less original shape, it might be type 2 seen here. The date range is mentioned there:

Morrow Mountain Projectile Point

That's just my best guess...

That’s pretty old if that’s it! Up to 6,700 years old... wow

This is a frame of slate - shale and a few different types of basalt points all surface finds from one site N. California the black slate is called Mariposa.
