Hello. I found a 1978 penny a tad bit smaller than normal size & about double the thickness. It makes the engravings on it look like they’re touching the edge of penny. Photo is attached. I searched online & have found nothing for this size in 1978. Is this an error? Anyone know of a possible value for this?

It is just damaged. Most likely intentionally hammered around the edge.

yeah i see that...

I.cutler is correct. It was rolled along its edge and tapped with a hammer.

Makes you wonder. I dug this 1952 Wheat three days ago and just took it out of the tumbler. Not as neat, but must have taken lots of time to ruin a perfectly good wheat.

Back about 1976ish I worked on sheet fed printing press. It had a channel that constantly moved to and fro. I once left a nickel in that channel all day, bumping into the stops on each end. Afterward it looked much like your cent.

Welcome to Tnet Tony! It's an interesting find.

I have a "Jail House Wedding Ring" somewhere in my loot. Sometimes incarcerated men will bond to each other and make
themselves wedding rings. They'd take a stainless steel spoon and a silver nickel and batter the edge of the nickel until
it became a band. Then they'd hollow out the middle.

Best wishes!
