Small item with writing on it...

Dug this little bugger up this morning. Have no idea what it is. Was thinking maybe a bird band or something along those lines. The diameter measures .35 inches. The writing is: 24 COL 238 IF

Any help is much appreciated.

I was ready to jump into complete agreement that your find was a bird leg band, then I noticed something. Leg bands are crimped on the birds leg, and that would require a break somewhere in the band. Your item looks to be solid. Other than that, wouldn't have the slightest. Maybe a wire or cable I.D.

There are several types of bird band, "open" which is crimped closed around the birds leg, "closed" which is slid over the closed foot onto the leg, and "rivet or lock" which, as the name suggests, is riveted through a flange. See the link for more detail .

And I was just looking at that site and didn't see the solid bands. Yup, I guess first guess was the best.
