Sniffin Silver

I had a friend tell me of a spot they found behind their house that they thought was Civil War related. They had swung a detector on this site before but hadn't found a thing. So I decided to go over there today and see what I could find. I treked back into the woods and when I hit the hillside I saw these rock structures built into the hill. There was 15 or more of these rock stacked walls in no particular order. I knew they weren't house foundations but what they are I have no clue. I swung on the hillside for an hour or so without a peep. I decided to go to the top of the hill and see what was up there. Finally a target, pulled a small round lead shot ,then a 30-30 shell. Moving around on top I got a signal and knew it was a coin and of course it was a stinkin linkin. I thought to myself, it's time to go. Filled my hole and started swinging again, 8 inches from the penny was a good signal, I thought coin spill. Opened the plug and I could see small silver. Thought I might of had a half reales but turned out to be a 1843 Half Dime. After that I couldn't buy another target, decided to call it quits. Enjoyed my short hunt, nice finding some 0ld Silver .

Excellent save, half dimes are one of my favorite coins. I would think the rock piles were carried from the hillside and stacked and ready for the wagon to build fences. alot of rock fences in that area.

Possible I guess, seems aweful steep to run a wagon on that hill though. Plus at the very bottom of the hill there was a stone fence running along the river. It almost looks like they were staged all over this hillside to shoot across the river from. Obviously something was going on up top since I found the half dime there, but it must have been a random drop, only one other old target was found. Maybe the site had been hunted before and that's why I couldnt find anything on the hillside. Or everything has slid down the hill and is buried . Certainly open to anymore thoughts.

I scanned them bud, quiet as a church mouse on the hillside.

I'm just glad I decided to swing up top, I would have gone home stumped. I couldn't believe the hillside produced nothing. maybe I need to go rehunt the hill with a Minelab

Not cairns, guys. They would have been a little longer than a body(approximately 6 ft in length) and wider as well(most at about 3 ft wide). They would have been more buried than anything, not so much above ground. Also, the way they would have been stacked to make a mound. I'd probably guess by approximate size that they were stacked there awaiting transport to make a fenceline or maybe a slate roof?
