With all the snow melt and heavy rain locally, most of my sites are not huntable due to flooding or access to them is not advised right now, so I went this morning to one of my old standby sites for the past 15 years. I believe the last dozen or more hunts have yielded no more colonial coins, but buttons and a few other relics still are to be found.

I was happy enough to get out and at least dig today and getting 4 Tombacs, 1 Pewter, 1 early gilt with no b/m buttons and one big pewter rosette that appears to have been gold plated, and a bonus of a gold plated design piece of brass, well, that is a good enough hunt for me.

The 1817 Large Cent and design piece and button were found my last hunt before the skies opened up late last week

Re: Soggy in Jersey but some relics recovered

Nice hunt, Don.

Two tombacs on one hunt here is rare--even when we find 20 or so buttons. I like the rosette. I have found one pewter example from an early site, and it was likewise plated (silver in the case of the one I dug). It was hit by the plow, and nowhere near as nice as your example.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Nice Largey Don. Looks like you're on a good site, that colonial silver should be around there. Is this the spot where

you found all those coppers the last couple years?

This site was found back in the mid 90's and for several years was the biggest producer of colonials, and some early year large cents, but like most spots any silver was rare. It is just a nice area to hunt, not far to walk to and no swamps like so many other areas. I have not found a colonial coin there since I joined TNet, so it has been a long time since one has appeared under the coil.

More Tombacs and a piece of Toast also

I went back this morning to the same site I got the 4 Tombacs at on Tuesday and ended up with another 4 Tombacs today(8 total), and one toasted Draped Bust Half Cent to boot. Shame on the condition of the Half Cent, but what is kind of neat is the fact that back in December 2000, I just got back from Saudi Arabia and had a brand new Minelab XS Explorer waiting for me.

Well, the first day I could get out with the new Minelab I found within the first hour using the XS a 1806 Draped Bust Half Cent! What is neat, the Half Cent I found today was not more than 15 feet from where I found that one back in 2000. Oh, and it is still the same detector over 9 years later. The reason the Half Cent is toast, well, the soil is wet and very acidic there, if only I had found it up on the ridge instead of next to the water.
I just checked the 1806 Half Cent I found in 2000 and the condition is not great but compared to the one found today, it looks perfect. :D

Those are some nice additions to your last outing. It is amazing that a few yards can make a huge difference in the condition of the coins.

Did you clean the tombacs with Aluminum Jelly?

No, toast is toast :tongue3:

Neil, I have never used Aluminum Jelly, have done Naval Jelly on gilt buttons but on Tombacs, nothing better than hot peroxide.

But what needs to come off tombac buttons? Your soil is far better than mine and I never have to clean a tombac, and if I do dig one that needs it, it's not worth cleaning because it's very tough green crud. The hp probably wouldn't work on it, and anything more harsh will turn the button a funky bluish-grey. It must be mostly just hard dirt on your buttons.

Great digs!!!You guys are so fortunate to have so many buttons back there!!!

I had a tombac that I thought was toast, but the jelly did the trick.

A little peanut butter and marshmallow Fluff would make it one delicious find!
