Nothing fancy, just some things I've found over the last month or so... I'll have to see if I can clean them up a bit better so I can read all of the backmarks.

Here's one that looks like it was "gold" at one time

Here's a whatsit. I thought it was a nail but it appears to be made out of lead. It was found in the woods, down pretty deep. Man that sounded good :)

This looks as if it might be an Aaron Benedict backmark, "* A . BENEDICT / WARRANTED *"— c. 1823-29.

This one appears to be an early 19th century button bearing a quality backmark of "TREBLE GILT / STANDD COLOUR."

Hey! Thanks so much for the ID on the buttons! I was hoping someone might recognize those two :) (I've gotten a couple of Imperial Standards before) The flat buttons are all from the woods in one particular park that's yielded a couple of LC's and a late 1600's British copper. The gold one is from what was originally a farm.

Thanks again.

No problem, Joe! Always glad to lend a hand when I can. ;)

Nice buttons Joe!

I actually found an oldie myself yesterday at our spot. From what I've seen so far it's from the period 1800-1830. I cleaned it in hot peroxide and it went from being completely unreadable to pretty decent. You may want to try that yourself.

Pic attached.

How'd you do at the beach yesterday?

Cheers,
B

Joe, I love finding old buttons! FYI the word "GILT" means the button was gold plated at one time. "PLATED" buttons were silver plated. These are a little more unusual to find than the gilted ones.

Happy Hunting!

Buttons are one of my favorite finds also. Congrats on your finds and thanks for posting for us that can't go back that far in history.

Multiple pics of the old lead would be wonderful. Sometimes an old piece of modified lead looks nondescript initially, but after some scrutiny turns out to be something unusal.

Does yours show any unusual markings? Does it look beaten or cast?

Sometimes a piece of lead is a piece of lead :D All kidding aside, it looks exactly like a nail "rolled up". It's heavy and has the whitish look of old lead. Definitely soft / pliable, as I can bend the thin part. Doesn't look hammered. A real "whatsit" if ever I saw one. It'll go in the box with all of the rest of the stuff I shouldn't keep :D

Thanks!

Thanks Neil! I actually didn't know the difference between the two. That's what I love about the hobby... always learning something new :)

Cool finds Joe, is this from the old site we hunted?
It was disappointing for me, I thought there would be some really good stuff there

Which site might that have been, Joe? Have you been naughty and giving away our spots? :)

If so, busted! ;)

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Yes, some of the stuff was from the spot we hunted. Never got anymore LC's other than the 1694 British Colonial copper. Just buttons, 2 rings and plenty of whatsits. I did manage an IH and my first shield nickel (although it was toast). I still believe there's some real old coins there...

Great job on the buttons Joe. I love finding those too.

Neil,
Thanks for that info on gilt -vs- plated. I didn't know that either.
