duh...duh... DFX
Haven't really had much detecting time lately due to other responsibilities but I did manage to get to the Berg with Mirage last week for a short after-work hunt and picked up a nice 1888 IH.
Today I hunted about 8 hrs there alone (no Mother's Day duties for me and everyone else was celebrating) and did pretty well again. The weather was perfect but the woods are growing in so fast that areas that were huntable last fall are quickly becomming overgrown and difficult. Massive spiderwebs are also everywhere I went today (new area) but I am not complaining.
Today I ended up w/4 silver. War nickle, 1928 Merc (real rough) 1951 Rosie and the surprise for the day...a 1919 Canadian silver 5 cent piece, the last year they were .925 (went to .800 in 1920)
That little sucker was tough to find in the pile...the Vibraprobe was not helping much but the DFX kept warbling silver.
I also dug a 1918S wheatie...a decent year. Today I nailed a 1897 IH in great shape! Bunch of other wheats too and a small silver heart w/a cross, and a 18K earring as well. Three pocket knives are from today too.
Also pictured are some bottles and asst silverware from a recent dig with my son Spencer at a local wooded area that was a muster camp before the civil war. Also from there is a 1996 IH and an undated V nickle. The Boy Scout whistle is from the DFX Only hunt at Camp McKinley as are the harmonica and accordian reeds.

Not a bad haul for the day..

That 1/2 Dime is a great addition to any collection!
Them IH's seem to avoid my radar! Been awhile since I dug one of those up!

If your gonna do a complete Photo of the Iceberg Finds..I have my meager 2 Rosie's and 100 something wheat's to add :-\

If it were a muster camp pre-civil war where are the pontiled bottles. Those all look like twist tops to me...except the second to the right but it still doesnt look that old. Dig deeper in that pit Dan.

No pit found yet Skrimpy...
The camp I referred to was built to muster troops for the war and was used again post-war to pay the troops, let them "calm down" a bit (that's what I read in a period newspaper article) and then send them home.
After the war the camp lay in disrepair and then in the early 1900s was converted into a private camp I think. Since the 1940's it has been used (and is still used) as a camp for inner-city kids. Two of the original log cabins remain but are in the process of being torn down as we speak. I was denied permission to hunt the camp proper (around the cabins and the messhall, etc) but have been hunting the wooded area behind the cabins. SOOOOO much trash it's unreal but an IH and early V nickle let me know that it might be worth wading through the junk. My son found the top of a syringe that was dated 1851 so there are some period pcs to be found. Amazing number of early 1900s bottles are in the woods, mostly whiskey. Other finds have been the typical camping area finds...old safety razor, flatware, pocketknives....
It's close to where my son lives, so it's convienient as well.
As to pontiled bottles, all we have found of those is pcs/parts.

If it were a muster camp, they are there. Mustering sometimes took days/weeks. There would have been tents cabins, activities, eating, and drinking and that means, relics, coins, bullets, and bottles. Just gotta find em.

Oh my gosh, Dan! 8) GREAT finds! And those weeds and spiders are thriving well in Alabama too! :P

Congrats on all those keepers! Nana :)

Way to go Dan! I enjoyed your post, those are some awesome finds --- wouldn't it great to stumble upon a cache of old gold or silver at that site!

Good job and thanks for sharing the story.....
