Here's a few pics of typical Pottery Shards from my area of southern Ohio. These are all from Ft Ancient sites and are all Shell Tempered. I even added a photo of some Pottery Discs.
Kinda neat to see your tribes up that way like putting handles on there pot & bowls. Here you don't see that all holes for handles on our tribes that I've found.

I really like finding those pot bottoms.
I have a few.

Yea Man,they hold up pretty good cause of being so much thicker.

Here's some of my Mandan Pottery Shards that I got in trade from Larson1951. I love the designs on the Mandan Pottery. We just don't have that elaborate designs on the Pottery in my area. The piece in the last two pictures has an Owl Face design on it.

You have very nice assortment of Mandan pottery rim designs, thank you for sharing your examples. :icon_thumright: I wish I had collected more samples of the different designs.

Nice to see you guy's pottery, without getting crazy myself here is some of my pieces found here.To find pieces with odd designs on them is some what harder to do here. But to find pottery pretty easy. This is without getting into all the styles of clay pipes I've/dad found as well.
Take Care,

Thank you ''timekiller'', for sharing that diagram of the development of the way the pot was made. From the diagram it appears that the shape of bottom of the pot pretty much stayed the same, but the size of the rim seemed to get quite a bit larger and more ornate.

I found this piece this week its a nice rim piece and quite thick still has some color on it.

Nice rim piece.
I think your close to the goods where you found that.
It doesn't look like it spent too much time being tumbled in the creek.
I bet you found that in your newly made sifter didn't you?

Hey GatorBoy! VERDE here! Thought you would enjoy this, but after every heavy rain at my home in Destin, the pottery shards would was out of the ground and I would just pick them up and put them in a box. I actually have a shell midden at the corner of the house. My next door neighbor actually found an ornate Aztec appearing statuette in the water line by his pier!! Obviously an Indian encampment at some time!! Unfortunately no Arrowheads!! GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

There is alot of spots like that where the banks have eroded away.
Sounds like a great spot.
I guarantee there are points there.
They are just below the pottery because of the sandy soil and water .. did you ever stand in the sand at the water's edge at the beach? What happens when the water rushes past your legs?
Your feet go straight down.

If you find a lot of pottery in an area it means a lot of time was spent there.. it also means that everything that went along with Native American life at that time is there somewhere also.

GatorBoy! Thanks for the wisdom!! Next time I go down to the coast I will have to try your suggestion!! The tide pulls through at about 5 knots on a strong outgoing current!! Of interest is the old land plats show the original lands edge at approximately 100-150 feet out from where it is today. Might be wise to try snorkeling a little further out if I can keep from getting killed by the jet skiiers!!LOL!! VERDE!!

No it washed down a hill. It was on dry land. Still a nice piece still has some red slip on it. No markings but the color made me keep it.

Nice!
Speaking of red.. I picked this one up today on my friends property.. might be a new place to start looking.
