Sometimes it doesn't pay to ask to hunt

Well, I was hoping my first big post would be to tell you of the finds from a farm house I have been wanting to search but I can't and here is the reason. The property is owned by a church so respected not trespassing and sent a long letter asking to hunt which included permission and waivers forms and I also stated that anything of historical value would be turned over to the village. Well after awhile I finally got a response and they said we need to ask everyone in the church if they would like to hunt first, if no one does then I have permission. I thought that was fair since it is their property. Well, the last email I got said that they had 2 people that will hunt the property and that ALL findings go to help fund the church and they ended the email with a sorry. What???????? No thank you for your great idea to metal detect the property???? No would you care to help them in the hunt?????? No you can hunt after the church people are done with their hunt?????? I am very disappointed that they took my idea and I don't even get to help them. It's not about finding riches although that is a plus. It's about the thrill of the hunt that makes it fun whether or not it's for me. I would have loved to help them but I have lost even more respect for yet another religion. Very disappointed in them. If it wasn't for me bringing this up to them they would never even be doing it. Well I guess the search for another prime location is on.

I wonder if the Lord would like how they "stole" your idea?

You did the right thing though, buddy.

Bone Dry Detecting...Kirk

Whatever!!

No worse than having someone say, I'm going to get a detector and do it myself.

This is easy. They already gave 2 other persons permission to detect,,,,so,,,,,,,,,all you have to do is start going to that Church and then you will get to be the 3rd person with permission. ;D

I like this suggestion. Join the church, hunt to your hearts desire, then de-join. Just a foolish thought on my part that I had to share.

I had less of a problem hunting in Germany then I have had in the states. I think so many people are just scared someone might twist an ankle and try to sue. It is unfortunate but that the way it is.Like the woman that spilled coffee on herself from McDonald's and won a big lawsuit. I would say coffee is usually hot so how she won that suit makes no sense. And of coarse good ol fashion greed plays a huge part.

Sorry you feel you were hard done by the church. I don't bother to hunt around old churches, they all have graveyards attached where I live. Some of my best hunts have been around old schools next to the old churches, the churchground itself is usually off-limits. Imagine seeing someone you don't know walking around your local churches graveyard with a metal detector and a shovel? :o

Re: Sometimes it doesn't pay to ask to hunt

who exactly answered your request, was it someone in authority or was it the church secretary ?
one thing you have to understand, it's harder to deny a simple request in person than by letter.

I be they know where the bodies are buried and you have them spooked!

Sorry to hear about you getting turned down. I know the feeling. I was just turned down by someone this week. He has had a air show every year on a huge farm which I have always wanted to hunt so I thought after the show, I would ask him if I could take my detector out there and look for dropped change and etc... For the last 6 months I have even advertised the air show for him with fliers, internet, and word of mouth and then I emailed him after the show and his reply was no because it might upset his mother(who I believe doesn't even live on the property) and he said that they comb the area real good and clean up anything anyone might have lost or left behind so there probably wouldn't be anything there for me to find anyway. What a D***A**. I guess he has MD'n eyes and can see under the foot tall grass that has been matted down by all the cars and people. But everyone is right, asking permission is the right thing to do. I'll just let everyone know the truth next year. It was the worst air show I've ever seen and I wouldn't waste my time with it. LOL!!

Good Luck with your next venture.

they may "OWN" the land, but they don't pay taxes on it, being a tax exempt, nonprofit (in theory) place!! tell them you'll continue to pay their taxes for them, that'll get you in the door!!

As Detectorists we have to keep our ethics on the straight and narrow! FMDAC ... Like you did.

Some just dont like the idea for one reason or another. Put it on the back burner. You may be lead to a much better spot. :)

Re: Sometimes it doesn't pay to ask to hunt

oh well you asked that's ok i guess don't ask again the only thing the owners could do is Chase you off
i did the same where i go to the church and asked said i had to ask the pastor did not ask and hunt it
any ways next time go their and ask the pastor he may not even do the hobby but do what your heart
tells you
PS you can always tell them you covered up all them holes
