spanish piece of eight planters bank counterstamp

I havn't got it graded all I know is that its 2 bits of a Spanish piece of eight and during the war of 1812 there was a shortage of quarters so it was authorized [planters bank ] to cut Spanish eight reales from 1812-1814ish not exactly sure
 

Looks like the overstamp reads (translated to English) New Orleans. Is that correct?
OK; found it:
HT 125, Low 82B.
Struck on a quartered section of a Mexico 8 reals. R6. 5.8 grams.
Struck with Brunk’s #5 obverse die and his “B” reverse die.
This issue was originally attributed by Lyman Low to Peuch, Bein & Co,. of New Orleans and placed by him in the Hard Times period. This attribution was followed by the collection fraternity, until recently when Robert Leonard’s extensive research proved that these counterstamped pieces were actually issued by the Planter Bank of New Orleans in the 1811-15 period.

I have to vote BANNER for this find.
After doing some research, this coin is loaded with numismatic, historic and educational value.
Coincidentally, the coin is also listed in Ralau in the Hard Times token section (HT124-126).
Ralau notes that some of these items were struck over counterfeit Mexico coins.
More importantly, he also notes that "Imitations of these cut segments exist!"
So, 'dft', you may consider getting this coin authenticated.

mintage?

im trying to find mintage info on these pieces, but probably impossible. just trying to figure the odds of me finding one-i played the lotto yesterday lol

Until you know what you have, it's impossible to determine the number minted. I say this because there's no way to ascertain how many counterfeits of this coin were minted; and you, apparently don't know yet whether or not if it's real or counterfeit. If you get it authenticated as 'real', then some extra effort to determine its original mintage number would be meaningful. Meanwhile, I still like my banner vote, NWS knowing if it's real or a counterfeit.

Would have to be a pretty old high quality fake to come out of the ground looking like that, so I highly suspect it's genuine. And of course a genuine stamp on a counterfeit Spanish is not a big deal, so I can't see how this wouldn't be a winner.

dfx, grats on the find , just now seen it. also if you would post a little history of how and where you found it ( not the exact spot just state ) the mods and members like a little history to go with finds , and its pretty much the only way to get Banner if that interests you .
