I received permission to hunt on this 1700s property today and besides digging 3 Indian head pennies I dug up this cut silver coin that I'm having difficulty ID'ING hoping that someone could help me tell what it is. I'm assuming a Spanish Reale? Thanks for any help hope everyone had a good weekend.

Hey Don I measured it according to your measurements and it matched up perfectly to the 40mm diameter so I think it's safe to say 8 reale. Thanks for that measurement!

Sweet cut silver find! Congratualtions. :occasion14:

Nice spanish silver but not to get to far off the OP's topic::What did they use to cut them? Did they have hack saws in them days?

I was thinking that too. Maybe a sharp chisel and hammer?

Congrats on the 1700's Spanish silver!

As was mentioned, they were cut to make change. Their value was based upon the amount of silver they contained. It likely wasn't lost by a Spanish explorer. These coins represented the majority of silver coinage circulating through the colonies. This was true especially in your area, further north, copper coins seemed more prevalent.

Congratz on an Awesome find!!!

If you're going to find a killer cut silver, that'd be the one to find. It's huge! Lol

Congrats on a killer find
