Hi,

Recently found this spoon by a house site in the woods. It seems to have a copper alloy and it measures around 7.5 inches. It is decently heavy and the neck of the spoon is somewhat thick. I believe the back of the spoon reads- (l84 R), which could be either the date and then registered. Hopefully the attached images are helpful. I greatly appreciate any insight into the age of the spoon or any history behind it.

Jack

I think you’re seeing the partial mark for “1847 Rogers Bros.” but the date is not the date the spoon was made. It’s a reflection that Rogers developed a process for electroplating onto base metal in that year, but it didn’t become part of the company name until 1862.

Your particular pattern was used by multiple manufacturers including Rogers from 1879 onwards and is variously known as “Newport” or “Chicago”:

The pattern was later also produced in Sterling silver (from 1886) but all ‘1847 Rogers’ will be electroplate.
