Apparently the stone is the sign. It appears on a map drawn up in 1946. We don't know how to interpret it. Some say the left hand side of stone forms and arrow/ triangle- we need to follow direction. The hole in the stone informs of either a cave or pit. We haven't a clue.Sign of what, just looks like a stone...?
Thread moved, "Help" is for help with sute software.
I would interpret it as a rock. If it's on a map, then perhaps the map provides context. How do you know it's this rock that's on the map, and not some other rock somewhere else?Apparently the stone is the sign. It appears on a map drawn up in 1946. We don't know how to interpret it.

The stone is identical to the one drawn on the map. We have also found an old lime pit- also drawn on map. So far so good. Measurements mentioned are in 'var' not sure what this means. We're walking around in circles at this time looking for other signs. Especially a water spring but if ever there was one, it's dried up. We'll keep searching as one cannot make lime without water.I would interpret it as a rock. If it's on a map, then perhaps the map provides context. On my return to location I'll take more pictures. I'll include more of the background and surrounding area. I'll further enlighten you on story behind map. Can't post picture of map as others are on the same trailFYI....If you want help, it helps to give members more info about something in a photo. A random photo with no back story doesn't give any info to go on..
I'll be posting more pictures of area and disclosing more infoI agree ! maybe a larger picture showing it all would help![]()

Thank you for clarifying the vara. The 'map' is hand drawn so, not a map in the true sense of the word.I only see a stone.
There is an old Spanish unit of length called the “vara” (meaning “rod” or “pole”) which is usually abbreviated to “var” on maps. It’s just under a yard at 0.87 of a metre. Not in use today, but 1946 wouldn’t be too late to see it on a map, especially a map relating to property deeds or land ownership. Your introductory post said you were in Northern Greece though, but that doesn’t mean you’re now referring to a Greek map.

Thank you for your most informative response. The info on the 'varas' is valuable indeed. We agree that it is in a covered space, tunnel or bunker. I honestly wouldn't know how to go about 'trying for an aura' but will look into it. Will follow your advice and not displace or destroy anything. Weather permitting we will venture back out to site and keep up with the search for signs. These I'll post on finding.Got to locate spring water but it's bone dry up there maybe it's seasonalIt appears there are 2 Rocks that have been used to make the shape it's portraying.
The first impression was indicating something covered, or a concealed portal.
If it's a map supposedly indicating clues to some buried Auriferrous Metal(s),
you can also possibly try for an aura. It's a viable, well proven possibility.
I would even call it a great potential short-cut... If it's something that;s
really deep like a mine, keep following the signs. The var may be
meaning measured in Varas, approx. 33.33 in., which are of old Spanish...
I think you're correct on the triangle, but it's upside down, which I've seen too...
To convert varas to feet, follow these steps:
Understand that one vara is approximately 33.33 inches.
Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12 (since there are 12 inches in a foot).
Try not to displace anything, so if you need to measure. Sounds pretty interesting, Good Luck!
- Calculate the conversion: 33.33 inches Ă· 12 = 2.7775 feet.
- Use the formula: Feet = Varas Ă— 2.7775.
- For quick reference, remember that 1 vara is roughly 2.78 feet.
- If converting multiple varas, simply multiply the number of varas by 2.7775 for the total in feet.
Interesting pictures and something to look out for. And...you're quite right in all you say and info is really only relevant to person/ people that did the job. We're not going to invest in a metal detector just yet but believe it to be a necessity. We are clueless when it comes to signs and our imaginations are getting the better of us. Further , that map has us going around in circles. Loads of man hours lay ahead.View attachment 2220237
Brown owl, This is what your pic of the 2 rocks, which have apparently been manipulated, reminds me of. That's just not a natural weathered or eroded shape that happened. Rather pointed, & intentionally depicting something...

Don't think that detectorists, or even miners, are necessarily going to be seeing what some people a long time ago did in stone, as a clue to something important to them.
That's the way it's supposed to be, & only those supposed to know, that are trained & experienced in the particular art, will see the shapes & begin to realize, as they were
meant to be secreted, not even noticed by just anyone passing by. But that is absolutely NOT a knock or taking anything away anything at all, from anyone that is Excellent
in Detecting, or Mining, or whatever else it is they may specialize in, that they know & do well. Still, there were a lot of treasures cached in the old days, using rocks as clues.
Since not many people know or understand, or even believe they did anything like that, or what to look for, many treasures lay hidden out of view, & will continue to until...
Someone with understanding of these shapes & signs puts their time in. Was similar clue carved in stone, that was nearby this opening, though it had already been found.
A long time ago, & re-used by another one apparently exploring, & also interested in caching...

Awesome, best of luck & timing to you. If you want to learn about auras, & much more about the way the old Spanish used the signs,Thank you for your most informative response. A huge thank you. I will follow up on all your leads. Much appreciatedAwesome, best of luck & timing to you. If you want to learn about auras, & much more about the way the old Spanish used the signs,

That's just what the rascals wanted to do, is keep the seeker running in circles, always finding another clue, but never the treasures.Interesting pictures and something to look out for. You're more than welcome, that's why we hang out when we have time...A huge thank you. I will follow up on all your leads. Much appreciated
Hehehe. I laugh as on deciding on a name I looked out the window to see a small owl sitting on a post. It definitely wasn't brown but is now. No owls or any animals on map but going on what sandy1 posts there just might be. I believe the best camera to have up there would be a drone with Lidar. We need to narrow down search area before bringing something like that in. Yip, safety first. Take careYou're more than welcome, that's why we hang around when we have time...
BTW, I guess you know 1 of the main signs that at least the Spaniards & Jesuits used, is owls.
To start trying for an aura, all you need is:
Pentax Optio W10, W20, W30, & the later "W" models may work well also. sandy1's guide shows you exactly how to set it up.
A tripod, good charged up battery, adequate memory card, patience & time, about 3- 3 1/2 hrs. for the interval shooting (10 sec.)
As you can see in Quinoa's cool pic with multiple cameras, it doesn't hurt to run a few if you got 'em... Take Care, Be Safe & Enjoy!
