Dug these up along a river bank in Charleston, SC. They are each about half inch in diameter and are made of lead...I think. The tops appear to be textured with a checkered pattern and there is a round cut out in the bottom. I was think maybe left over slag from bullet casting? Any ideas.
Gaming pieces sounds good. Duggap also got me thinking about the old roofer nails that were the heads were covered with lead. Then the checker pattern was made when the nails were hit and set with a waffle head hammer? What happened to the nail though?
Having reviewed a few other similar postings, I think they are most likely lead nail caps. Strange though that there was no building there... Thanks to all for the help
Works for me. I suppose the steel nails would have disintegrated long before the lead heads. And 2 different carpenters probably had different hammer head patterns on their hammers. And perhaps a rowboat rotted there.
