How big is it? stove burner off an old wood cook stove
 
only 1 1/2 inches . . . looks like you would have pressed the top and bottom to make the teeth grab?
 
Maybe an old metal zipper stop??
 
looks like it hinged....perhaps part of a shaker of a sort
