In my feeble attempt to catch up to Captn Se I decided to try out an 1855 homestead. I try to go out with the thought of "Dating" the site by at least finding something that would place a date on the property that I hunt. This was no exception. Drove by this place a few times in hopes of seeing some activity so that to I could try and gain permission to hunt. Long story short...He was there, I asked, he said "Bring it on, Goodluck." Had about 3 hours to try and find silver to keep the streak alive....my pipsqueeking little streak of 5 going on 6...Never knowing how many times this place has been hammered by other detectorists I started out at the front yard and proceeded to the side yard.

Not much going on by way of signals I thought this place was hit pretty good. Got a decent repeater signal at 50 on my Whites 6000 Pro. Thought for sure it was going to be a pull tab or some scrap aluminum. It was only 2 inches down. Flipped open the plug to see what I thought was a modern penny but to my surprise it was an 1864 Indian Head. My first dug Indian Head. Don freaked as did I. Of course we dug every 50 signal from here on out. Discovered some other stuff like an old oil lamp part and trash targets. But it was fun while it lasted for the 3 hours. This place is rather huge too and the owner got out his riding mower and cut all the grass for us to search all over the place. Probably a good 5 acres of grass to hunt. No silver today but the Brave is just as good in my book. There are some copper disease marks on it...anyone have ideas on cleaning her up? Hot peroxide? Or just leave it alone...One of the marks is right where the "L" for Longacre might be....Any advice would be great...Thanks for looking...HH and be safe out there....Jgas...

The IH is beautiful as is. I've tried peroxide on a few of the ones I found recently and wasn't happy with the results. As long as you can read the date, I'd leave it.

Sorry to hear that your streak is over, jgas. You had a great run, though. I'm still alive and kicking...got my 29th straight yesterday.

Your Injun is a great find. Is it a Fatty? In, 1864 there were two different Injuns minted...the Copper-Nickel (called a Fatty), and the Bronze(Copper,Tin, and Zinc) versions. The "Fatty" weighs in at 4.67 grams, while the Bronze weighs in at 3.11 grams. The Bronze is the same size and dimensions as all post '64 Injuns.

Congrats!! Time to start a new streak!

Thanks for all the replies...

Thanks Captn. Never really knew what the difference was in the "Fatty" and others...I will weigh it tonight after work and see what it is. I think it is the Bronze version though...I will let ya know.

Thanks Crazy, Bob, Hunter, Susan, treasuredigger, Soreknees, and Colnial Kirk. Happy hunting all and thanks again for the replies!
