They are tearing up a huge section of street and sidewalk near my house.

Actually, its been torn up for some time, but I've not been able to get out and hunt. Finally today I did, and went to hit this big construction site. It goes for several blocks, and the whole street is closed. I didn't get to hunt where the road was--I was too late for that--so instead I focused on the sidewalk areas and where people's lawns had been torn up to make room for sidewalks. This area isn't too awfully old, most of the houses were probably built in the 40s or so on average.

I could tell by the occasional hole that I was not the first to detect the whole area, but there were several areas where I seemed to be the first to hunt in that section. One lady drove by and yelled out her window "someone already beat you to it". I shrugged and yelled back "they didn't get it all" and she made a weird face and drove off, undoubtably wondering what all we were finding.

I wasn't finding much, but whoever hunted it so far did miss a few things:

Thanks everyone for the great replies!

Oh yeah, I made the face indeed.

Right before I found this I was sarcastically pretending to be from the East Coast:

"Oh look Mabel, another 3 large cents in the same hole--what did you find?"

"Oh just another one of these pesky colonial gold pine tree dismes"

About then I dug this quarter, and bit my tongue. ROFL

ROTFLM*O ;D ;D ;D

That's nice, congrats on the silver! Only 1.85 million of those made. HH, Mike

That quarter dollar is fantastic indeed..... what I like about it is that it is smack bang on 1900.... the start of a new season in time ;D

Trust and pray that it also means a start to a new season in finds for you....

God bless
Peter

Nice coin! Next time you see that lady you should waive it around in front of her face!

Actually the Western states hunter is fortunate with the "S" mints, almost always there are less minted there than any other mint. Here in the East, most are Philly's and are more common. For the most part there's more west cost coins that even the New Orleans coins back in the day.

Get this... I live in NY, I dug a 1894-S Barber Half last year, 4 million minted vs. the Philly mint of 1.1 million.

Go figure that one! ::)

I'm happy because you found a silver quarter. Congrats, Mabel. ;)

But unfortunately now, I'm feeling a little sad and jealous, when I think of that barber you dug.....since I haven't found one yet. :'(

But it's OK, because now I'm cracking up because of the east coast comment. :D

But then, I looked out the window and there's snow on the ground, so I'm sad again. :'( :(

I think I'll go out and dig up a large cent or two. That will make me happy! ::) ::) :P

Congrats MLW on the finds and especially the Barber quarter ! It's in nice shape.

:o Wow, that's cool but just imagine if it had been a 1901-S quarter. Everybody talks about the 16-D merc and the 1909-S vdb cent, but a 1901-S quarter is my dream coin.

Thanks everyone!  I just love all these great comments.

I do count my blessings regarding the 'S' mints.  I have found several rarish old 'S' mint coins over the years and am quite thankful for that.  It does offset the blues a bit about not being able to push the age envelope back too far.

When I found this one, I knew one of the early 1900s 'S' quarters was a great rarity, but I couldn't remember which one exactly.  I really had to resist racing home to see if I had found the 'right one'.  heheh  Still, this one would bring about $40 if I were to sell it--which isn't bad--even if the '01 would have brought thousands.  I'm not complaining.  ;D

Thanks again everybody!

PS Lisa you have *snow*?!  More blessings to be counted by me, I guess.

That is one beautiful coin....Especially considering the pH of most of the PnW soil......How much cleaning didit take to make her that pretty?
Awesome job!

Dang Mlw67, I had to go check my collection to see if my quarter was missing! ;D

This is the only barber quarter Ive found, and you just found its sister 1000 miles away!

Same condition and everything, I guess we could start the 1900 S barber quarter club! Congratulations!!!

I know I made that face when It came out of the dirt :o
