Hey everybody, I just got back from a week at the beach and loved it. Hunted 2 hours every morning at low tide. I have a long hanle stainless steel scoop and it worked great, however when I'm not in the water I'm going back and forth over the wet sand. My left Elbow(I carried the scoop in my left hand) became more and more sore to the point that I don't know if I would have been able to hunt the day after we came home. I have and Excal II and I have to kind of pull the scoop a little behind me to keep it from interfering with the detector. I wear a fanny pack for the trash and the goods while beach/water detecting and I am looking for suggestions from you guys on a good way to drag the scoop without causing damage to my elbow. It is still sore and we got home last friday >:(. I am thinking of attaching a bolt or something to the scoop handle and using webbing to then attach it to my fanny pack belt or something. I use the drag marks of the scoop to grid the beach also so it is purposeful for dragging it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, just wandering what you all do. HH :icon_thumleft: :help:

go to home depot/lowes... the local hardware store, etc. They sell a hook with a belt clip that is designed for holding power tools (drills, etc.). Clip it right onto the fanny pack, or your own belt. When you're walking, set the basket into the hook (or just in front of it), and let the handle drag behind you. You can keep your hand on the basket to keep it from sliding out, and the benefit... if working in the sand, is that the handle drags behind you and leaves a furrow in the sand.

Steve has the right suggestion. I drag mine, but have used the claw hammer hooks for holding the scoop. Trouble with this is I keep needing to use the scoop.

I used one of those hooks from Lowes. I had a smaller scoop and it worked great until the scoop broke from age and use. Now I use my large aluminum scoop. Only problem I had was the scoop would pull my pants down. :tongue3: So I just sling it over my shoulder now.

Thanks for the great tip Spez401 :icon_thumleft:

Thanks,
I will definetly try that. I don't think my elbow would hold up much longer the way I have been doing it.Thanks again.

Too funny!! :o If my pants come down maybe the beach will clear out and I'll have more places to hunt :tongue3: :laughing9:

I use a large SS Scoop and usually just drag it. I tried hooking it to my belt but that created to many issues, many of those already mentioned as well as the weight wearing out my hip. I've found that it drags best if I hold the handle up near the top. Holding it lower tends to fatigue my arm. You can also carry it but make sure that you are holding it at the balance point. A little back or forward will give your wrist and arm fits.

Thanks for the reply. I have been dragging it with the scoop on the ground a good foot or more behind me, holding the handle at the very top but it is killing my left elbow. Today makes the 5th day with no detecting and it is still very sore so I am going to have to come up with something. Looks like I will be going back to the beach next week so I'm going to have to act fast!! Thanks again for the reply, I will be going to Lowes or Home Depot tommorow to snoop around some.

Okay, I'm the "odd man out". I like the short stainless scoop I got from Kellyco. I carry it in the left hand without dragging. And I grab it two-handed to shake out, because I had the same problem as the Captain.

I had the same problem dragging it behind me I was getting serious tennis elbow. So now I make sure I keep my elbow bent and and not fully extended. My scoop had a loop on the end I would slip around my wrist so it made the problem even worse because it kept my arm always pulled back.

alright heres the tip of the day go to a scuba store they sell lanard cords with clips hook one clip to belt and the other end to your scoop you can drag your scoop and just unclip to use its always attached to the cord this works great in rough surf as if wave knocks you over you wont lose your scoop
Wow, I really like that idea!! Thanks, I will have to add a trip to the dive shop for my snooping tommorow and see what I can come up with. I was thinking all along about some way to attach it to my fannypack. Like the hook mentioned above alot too but this solution would work in and out of the water so this looks like what I may try to do. Thanks for taking the time to give me this great idea. HH :hello2:
