Hello All,

Any idea what this is? It is thin, stamped, gilded brass.

Have any attachments on the back?

No solder or braising marks that I can see. The center disc with the swan on it is not one piece with the other two pieces, so the orientation of the center disc may be incorrect--but the pieces do go together. They were all in the same hole.

How does the round piece attach to the other part? I'm thinking some kinda clip or bookmark.

Yes, the round disc has broken away from the circular border. This is quite a flimsy piece. No trace of lead backing or filling. I wish the whole thing was there, then I could look for a loop or bar on the rest of the pieces.

They usually are very flimsy Will :) and the ones I have seen have no backing :read2:

 Then I will call this one a belt buckle for now. Thank you for the replies my friend.

Peanut posted a complete swan plate back in July. It doesn't appear to have any obvious fastening system :icon_scratch:

Well Ill be... good catch IronSpike. Can we see the back?

The back looks exactly like the front except that the design is stamped in rather than raised. Only weird thing is that the back is gilded on my relic as well. Would a buckle have gilding on both sides?

I was thinking we might see solder marks or attachment points or who knows what someone may see? If there are absolutely no marks, then I dont think it can be a buckle. Its odd that peanuts picture seems to be sitting on a belt. ???

Now that's a great guess! Are there any other photos of that piece online? Is it a Victorian Era bookmark?

I will post photos of the back of the one I found as soon as I get a chance.

Thank you all for your help.

Just found this post. I recently found this exact plate and posted it on Facebook only to find out that at least two other diggers have found them as well. This plate did have attachment points as seen from the backside of mine.

Communicating with the other two diggers, all three of us dug the plates in the SC Lowcountry at different locations but along with confederate and union buttons. We suspect that this may be a horse tack item. Sorry for the bad color on the backside shot but was taken with bad lighting.
