Metal Detecting
I have a couple of old vacant places with tall grass and weeds that I would like to use my detector on.

I have read where some have used 4x8 sheets of plywood.

Getting a sheet of plywood in and out of my vehicle, even cut up, would be a chore.
Then there is the man-handling of it out in the field.

Has any one used a playground mat or maintenance mat or anything similar ?

One is where an old 1800's school used to be :)

You could rig up a crop circle tool using a 2x4 and some rope.

Interesting concept!:icon_thumleft:

Maybe a gas powered weed eater or brushcutter if the location allows it?

Site clean up is a time saver as is using a smaller snipping coil. I have even used a rake to remove trash in the past.

detect backwards......... your shoes will flatting out the tall grass and give you a line to swing your coil

Rick, the plywood technique would be worth trying. But cut a hole in the middle, large enough to use your digger through. This way you can kneel and not get wet
from snow or mud. When you get a good signal move the plywood to put the hole over the target area. Course you would have to carry the plywood on top of your
car. A pickup would be better.

If you go backwards, don't step on a snake or bee's nest! I don't think I could do that.

Thanks for the ideas.
I have a breathing condition (COPD), so some of these are pretty much out of the question.
I don't want to do the crop circle thingy because then I would have to fend off the aliens from landing on their newly built runways :laughing7:
I would probably stumble and fall walking backwards.

Anyway, I am going to check out a maintenance mat. See how heavy, thick, etc.
I was also thinking (bad idea!) that I could cut up a 4x8 sheet of ply into four 2x4 foot sheets
with a rope loop on each and butt them against each other in the field.
Maybe even two 3x4 sheets.
That way I wouldn't have to handle one whole complete 4x8 sheet at once...
Lastleg, I like the idea of cutting a hole in the middle -- Thanks!

I've put this out before, but will do it again. If allowed, MOW the area. If you do not have a gasoline powered mower, go to your local tool rental shop. Rent a large rear wheel mower... if you have problems with strenuious activity, rent one that is powered and pulls itself. Mow the area. Then search.

BTW... if you mow the area, you can do a couple of lines, then detect them, then mow a couple of more lines, and detect them... easier than laying out grids with string.
