Stop by the barber after work today for a quick trim. He asked me what I'd been up too, so I told him about a couple metal detecting finds. He found it very fascinating and directed me to some old cellar holes near the family farm,, not far from my house.
I only had about 30 minutes of daylight but here's what I found!
I have to thank my wife for doing the research while I was in the shower. Lol

Does anyone else know anything about these tokens? I'd never even heard of them...

Temperance societies pledged to end the use of alcohol, and issued holed tokens for their members to wear pinned to their lapels, or to take home as souvenirs of society functions and anniversaries. The medals and tokens of the Washington Temperance Societies usually bore renditions of the first president. The earliest temperance pieces were struck in the 1830s by James Bale (alone, and in his partnership with Frederick B. Smith), and featured a scene of a man retrieving fresh water from a well with the “old wooden bucket.”

If no one can identify your find - you might consider posting your pictures on TOKENS & TAGS for more exposure...

Interesting that it says you will use no alcohol as a beverage, which leaves alcohol use as a "medicine". I think that was an early loophole. Gary

A very interesting find for sure and kudos to your wife for doing the background research! :notworthy:
I love a post that offers background perspective to the find.

Sounds like you're onto a good site with a find like that popping up in just 30mins.

Best of luck to you on your return,
Dave
