Tenn. CSA Cavalry Camp Relics & One Relic I Have Always Wanted To Dig

Today, Dman was working in his store and Josh was operating his businesses when I pulled up to hunt one of the two CSA Cavalry Camps where we have hunted lately. Did I feel guilty being out hunting while they were working-NO-LOL. No banner finds there today but there is one item in the first pic that I have always wanted to dig intact. Did you ever have something that you have seen in a relic book that wasn't a big deal but you just wanted to say you found one?
The iron hoof pic as shown on page 140 in Crouch's Relic Book is one of mine. These were blacksmith made. It was especially meaningful to find the pick in that particular Confederate Cavalry Camp because it was not 100 ft. from where I dug the Block "I" on the last day of January. For accuracy sake, the pewter underwear button came from a scouting trip with Dman to a U.S. Camp yesterday where he dug a brass belt adjuster. Josh went hunting near his home yesterday and sent us a phone pic of a 1898 dime, two flat buttons, and some small round balls that he dug. HH from the Tennessee Trio, Quindy.
NEWS FLASH-Congrats to Dman as the C.S.A. Atlanta Aresenal Rectangular Buckle that he dug last Fall made the current issue of American Digger Magazine that is just out. I haven't received my copy yet but Modern Miner emailed us with the good news. There will be no living with him now-LOL. Josh says he wants a FREE copy-LOL. WTG Doug, you made the Trio look good.

That's true Randy. Yesterday, I dug some of the netter iron signals too. The geometric shape of the hoof pick made it read better than it was. Thanks for looking, Quindy.

Re: Tenn. CSA Cavalry Camp Relics & One Relic I Have Always Wanted To Dig

Nice finds, Quindy. While that piece may have improvised as a hoof pick at some point, they really are wagon box staples that have been peened or clinched over to keep them from pulling out.

Hoof pic also used for other purposes , is this correct . ??? .Quindy I have found these in my area but never could figure out the exact use . Do you still use the 1266 X for relics out at the camp ??? ;D CMD dawg

They look like them for sure Rob. I assume these are the mounts (that were on the outside of the wooden bed) where the wooden standards could have been inserted? Thanks, Quindy.

Dawg, I think what Rob is saying is that were blacksmith made and would have been a standard wagon part. They were attached by driving them into the wagon bed wood. If they pulled out, they could not be easily installed (hammered) back into the weathered wood so they were then used for picking stones from horses hooves. They were a common part for period wagons They were light, readily available, and fit easily into a cavalry soldier's saddle bag. I have found many pieces of them in CSA Camps but this is my first whole example. Dman dug 3 old pattern Colt bullets just feet away from the pick. The Confederate Soldiers had to improvise as best they could. Correct me if I'm incorrect Rob. HH, Quindy.

Nice Buckle ...congrats ! :hello:
Thanks HISPAN. It's not nothing near as old as the beauties you recover but I'd say it predates the American Civil War and some Confedferate Cavalryman brought the bridle and his horse from home. I call those iron buckles the "humpback" type and they are definitely 1800s period. That one was 9 inches deep. Thanks for looking, Quindy.
