Thanks Red Coat. Good info. I did not know that. Makes old buttons more explained.Terms such as "Orange" to describe buttons that weren't actually gilded (they used coatings with little or no gold, including lacquers) first begin to appear after 1796, but indented backmarks didn't appear until about 1810, so it's later than that.
