"That ain't no Merc!" - Half reale
Got out yesterday with FortbedfordBob and DeArmittPA... we decided to try to squeeze out another good find or so from a well pounded Whiskey Rebellion camp that has produced well in the past.
Anyhow, things were slow as expected... after about 90 minutes I had the dropped musket ball and a few little pieces of lead, and I doubt most of those were period correct. The first picture shows all of the finds... the ones from this site are on the right of the nail.
We have been looking at this field across the road for a while, thinking it should produce. We decided it was time to ask, and shortly thereafter we noticed that the farmer started plowing it..
So, to make a short story of this we headed there and secured permission..
And soon discovered that it was just loaded with iron. Not more than five minutes later I was swinging along the newly plowed furrow and a 11-41 signal rang out on the Etrac. I was close to the road, and I thought this probably would be a piece of can slaw, but.... looking down I could see it was on the surface! The plow narrowly missed this target, so I took a picture of it seeing light in a long long time....
DeArmitt came over to see what was up as he saw me taking the picture.... As I picked it up I thought I could see a part of the torch on the back of a Merc, and told him it looks like I found a Merc.
As I handed it to him I thought it seemed mighty thin to be a merc, but it was too big to be a half dime....
About 2 seconds later He yelled for Bob... "That ain't no Merc!"... It was this nice little 1774 half reale.
Other than a flat button, I didn't find much the rest of the day.... everything I found from this site was on the left of the nail in the first picture. But that did not matter, I had fun swinging the machines and hanging out with the guys.
Thanks for looking, and to the farmer for turning up a nice piece of history.
