The Abbey Project - Day 3 - FINISHED - Then moved & lucked out a ROMAN BROOCH...

(In total I detected for 6 hours 15 mins & Cru'dad 2 Hours & 15 minutes.)

Today I was mostly solo gridding the field next to the Abbey Site to finish it off & with Cru'dad's late arrival that's what we did.
As we were getting out of the main area the finds slowed up, in fact the first coin took me 55 minutes to get but it was the best of the day.

Cistercian medieval glazed floor tile from the Abbey!
6 Roman Coins - 1 nice one of Crispus, London mint (best of its type so far)
Medieval Buckle
Lead Stylus
5th-6th C Saxon Cruciform Brooch (Cru'dad got this the other day whilst doing a short hunt looking for some lost plough bits)
Lead Token (interesting one, maybe from the Abbey??)
Possible part of a Lead Pilgrims Badge? (Can't ID yet)

On the way home we decided to check the state of a couple of our Fav fields. When we arrived, the Roman Lion Site & Sestertius Hill where still in bean stalks. I nearly said 'lets not bother!' But I'm glad I did, as I found a stunning 2nd C AD Plate Brooch out in the middle of no-where, just poking out the top. Cru'dad got a cut down Roman Coin & I got a further small piece of a Saxon Brooch. A rewarding 45 min stalk bashing wander.

Yes it would have had a stone or enamel/glass insert. Pretty sure it came up from last years deep plough which was the biggest in 12 years+

The reverse type has two bound captives at the base of a standard with VOT XX.

FURTHER UPDATE;

I assumed the floor tile would be circa 14th C, however it maybe a bit earlier!

It transpires that BLANK is a little unusual in using wooden stamp incised relief tiles in black' brown and green. .Most Cistercian Abbeys went straight from flagstone or beaten floors to more highly decorated tiles in one step and missed out the hand or wood block incised floral patterns.It could be that BLANK are making their own floor tiles, a skilled monk from Warden may be doing the rounds of the daughter houses passing on his skills.
