The Fields are Alive with Pickers & Combines, Detectors and The Eagle Has Landed

Hi all, I know it's been awhile since Gary and I posted, but it's been a busy summer. Finally the Corn and Beans are coming out of the fields at a record pace here in Ohio.

Gary and I have been hitting some of our hunt sites and most of them have been paying off. We got out Friday and Sunday and we both found some really nice finds.

One of my finds at a Ghost town near were I live was a Eagle Head. I think it might be brass, I'm not sure if I want to clean it up too much. It still has wood in it from I suppose wooden stanza. Really not sure how old it is, but it sure was a GREAT find.

I also found in the same field 6 IH's 1882, 1887,1887,1891,1904 & 1906. A shielded nickel 18??, two buffalo nickels, one no date and the other 1936, a Mercury dime, no date, a Washington 1941 Quarter, five wheat penny's 1919,1944, 1951 D, 1951 D & 1955 D. I also found a 1951 Dog Tag, 3 buttons, one says Pay Day on it, 2 sleigh bells, one home made and the other can't read the number and a Token that has a picture of New York City hall on it and that writing, with a Liberty picture on the front, no date.

Gary found many items at another site and at the Ghost town site. They are as follows. Three IH penny's 1888 ( no 8 over the 7 ), 1892 & 188?, one wheat penny 1916, a Seated Half Dime 1841, a Barber Dime 1899, a Large Cent, no date, a 1841 Mint Drop coin, not sure what this is yet. A good luck token from the VFW National Home, 1933, a Handihook, a token worth 5 Cents in Trade and a Toy Train.

I gotta say, I sure love this fall weather we are having here in the Great State of Ohio.

Hope you all are doing just as well. HH, Ringfinder

I am including pictures of our finds, plust some of the junk from the fields.

Hi Lonnie, yes I think the Eagle was on a flag pole.  It measures over 2 inches at the bottom.  I found it at an old ghost town near me.  I've found a few Civil War reunion badges at this same site. I guess I'll just have to start watching for Eagles on canes and flags and compare notes.

Thanks Again for everyone replies.   HH, Ringfinder

I found the Eagle!  I had earlier indicated that I was pretty danged sure that it was a cane topper...well...I was wrong.  So I just had to bump this up to let you know.  Something just didn't seem right about the cane topper idea.  Your find of CW reunion badges at the same sight was my tip-off.  I started looking... and it took a while (I bookmark finds I'd like to do a bit of research on).  I found an example of a saddle pommel in one of my books that was similar, so I started looking again this afternoon.  Here it is--1840's-60's Officer's Saddle Pommel.  According to the link below, some of these were "recycled" for a variety of other uses after they were removed from the saddles. Evidently, the find is worth at LEAST $150.

(Third item down)

By the way, a gentle toothpicking of the high points in the design (and leaving the verdegris in the grooves) will improve its eye-appeal, and it couldn't hurt.  (In your first post, you said you didn't know if you should clean it any more)

Cheers,

Buckleboy  :coffee2:

Buckleboy, you are Truly the Man, I can't believe you still thought about my Eagle find and came up with a solution. Thanks so much for your help. I still can't believe you found the answer to the puzzle. You are Truly the Man. Thanks Again and Again.

I will have to say, you don't give up, I found that Eagle last fall and you came up with the answer in March of 2008.

Someday, if you get to Ohio, stop by and see me. I sure would like to meet you. Email me and I will give you the details on how to get to my place. Thanks Again for the information. I owe you big time!!!
