Hey all,

First post on this forum of my first and last 'hunt' of 2022. I stumbled across a field with unusual crop marks. A two-day search followed in an attempt to find out more about this place. The results were somewhat disappointing. A pile of iron (lots of UO's - Unidentified objects -) and still an unsolved mystery.

Best regards,
Kaj

Welcome to the forum.
Lots of iron that's for sure.(Barn/farm related)
Then there is some pottery and glass also, which could mean a home was near by.
The middle of the 2nd photo of the finds could that be a Roman hob nail?
Lots of activity

The designated area was littered with nails, pottery sherds and bricks, which might be an indication of something.. But no coins (and I really took my time) or anything definitive to put a time period or periods on this place..

Thats the kind of site you could hunt for years and years and still not find everything.

True that :P

Welcome to TNET .. You were definitely tuned into the iron! Fun finds none the less. Which ones are the UO's?

Well done !

Thank you!

Welcome aboard Cograts on your finds

Yeap, seems to be 1 Roman Nail, totally out of place with all the modern stuff.

Welcome to Tnet:hello:

I was a little surprised by the title. When I lived in Belgium it was the only time I didn't detect, I thought it was illegal?

This one? And what is a "hobby nail" exactly? I wasn't able to find any other examples on the web.
I've not heard of a ''Hobby Nail'' either. Its the one just to the upper left of your arrow. Like these ones;

Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

Thanks! :D

Sorry about the spell correct reference on the Hobnail.
A few screen grabs on explanation and pictures of what they actually were intended for for those that don't know.

"Legionnaires in the Roman army wore marching boots, called caligae (singular caliga). These may appear to be merely an open sandal. However, they were sturdy enough to wear all day, every day, even on long marches.

A thick lower sole would be attached to a mid sole with hobnails. This added strength to the boot and increased its durability. (I don’t know enough about shoe construction but that is the comment made by several sources.)"
