Astronomers have just spotted something really strange moving through our solar system — and it seems to be coming our way. Or maybe this is not such an unusual occurrence? Man has had the ability to find such objects for just a few years, and the universe is billions of years old. I would expect that as our scientific abilities increase so will the number of "unique" discoveries made. Who can even imagine what else is out there?

Initial observations of 3I/ATLAS determined it to be either an asteroid or a comet but it has now been determined as a non-periodic comet. It probably wasn’t seen earlier because it was passing in front of the Galactic Centre’s dense star fields, which would have made it difficult to discern.

Observations by David Jewitt and Jane Luu using the Nordic Optical Telescope on 2 July 2025 revealed it to be "clearly active" with a diffuse tail, and a team from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias at the Teide Observatory also observed it to have the same activity.

Observations from the Faulkes Telescope North at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii determined the comet’s coma to have a reddish colour indicative of dust, similar to the first observed inter-stellar object, comet 2I/Borisov. Its apparently bright magnitude of 18 shows little variation (less than 0.2 magnitudes), possibly due to the dust obscuring its rotating nucleus. That also makes it hard to determine actual size of the nucleus, but the maximum estimate is 24 km (15 miles) in diameter.

The comet entered our Solar System at a speed around 61 km/s (140,000 mph) following a highly eccentric orbit around the Sun, to which it will make the closest approach on 29 October this year at a distance of 200 million km (128 million miles).

I find that comforting yet disappointing at the same time.

The calculated pre-history of the comet 3I/ATLAS shows that it originated in another star system outside our own Solar System and was somehow ejected into interstellar space (the space between stars.) That likely happened millions, or even billions, of years ago and it has since drifted through space until it recently arrived in our vicinity. It has been approaching from the general direction of the constellation Sagittarius, where the central region of our galaxy (the Milky Way) is located.

It has an extremely long orbital period and is moving too fast to be bound by the Sun’s gravity, such that it's on what is known as a hyperbolic trajectory that doesn’t have a closed orbital path around the Sun. That is, it has more than enough speed to escape the Sun’s gravitational pull and, unlike periodic comets which typically have a closed orbit around the Sun with a period of less than 200 years and come into view on a predictable timetable, it will pass through and exit our Solar System never to be seen again.

It should remain visible to ground-based telescopes through until September 2025, and then be too close to the Sun to observe until it reappears on the other side of the Sun by early December 2025. It won’t come closer to Earth than about 150 million miles (240 million kilometers).
