The Track-way Site - Day 3...

The snow has melted & the ground was sticky but not super sticky plus the temperature was much better at just above freezing. Therefore, it was time to grid-on for just over 5 hours. Once again we did twice as well as we expected at this low yield site. :icon_thumright:

9 Roman Coins (3 holed in the Saxon period)
Lion Button
1816 Royal Navy Button
1836 Four pence
Victorian token/toy money
Lead token with sun-face on it.
1st C AD Brooch (First of its type for the collection - 'Langton Down variant' )
1 5th C AD Saxon Cruciform Long Brooch (early new type for us!)
1 Saxon Brooch yet to be IDed, not in the book, I think it will turn of 5th C though!

Personally? Nope, but I've seen a couple of his shows.
& your right I'm full of stories not just detecting ones either, must be a little of the Irish in me....

Its like anything its only as good as the location & although this is a large (10 acre++) early Saxon Site we are lucky that it started to be re-used again in the Georgian period until about 1900 when that disappeared into the farmland. So there is plenty of interest, without that it would be a tough call to just find 1 Saxon brooch every 10 man hours (If lucky). Finding as much as we do means spending every hour in the right places at the right time & if we were not getting at least 1 recordable item an hour, it would be time to rethink & move.(part of why we are so successful)
