Here's the view of the needle from a ridge southeast of Needle Vista Viewpoint. The view from there doesn't match the doodle. The view that corresponds best to the needle is seen from a compass heading that overlays Yellow Peak. Because I don't think Yellow Peak, or anything else in that general direction, is in good agreement with other LDM clues I have to conclude that the doodle is bogus and is a figment of someone's imagination.

Getting back to the doodle, the image below shows the doodle flipped horizontally, and the second image shows a view of the needle slightly east of it and looking to the south. I'm completely open-minded as to whether the doodle is a hoax or not, and if it is credible as to whether it should be viewed as it is, or reversed.

I will try to answer your interrogation as of whether the doodle should be reversed or not, using the doodle copy of a copy of another copy is very easy to reverse the map but using the real copy in the museum is different, see the photo, let's start with the kind of paper it was made on, this kind of paper is made from wood pulp, you can see if you zoom at the right end where it is tear you will see some small fiber and you will see somekind of layer, the same kind of paper was used making tapestry, when you half soak a piece of tapestry you can easily peal of the layers, if you ever had a piece of tapestry in your hand you can feel the chalk part of it, now the color yes with time it became yellowish but at original it was yellowish as natural color,

if you take this doodle in your hands and reverse the picture you will not be able to see true it why, because this kind of paper is thick even if you put a light you wont be able to see true, so no one can see the pencil tracing on the other side why, because the only pencil that was capable to write on this kind of paper at that time 1850 1890's, was made of graphite/clay red cedar wood, anything using ink pen/pencil/feather, would have ruin the paper like stains even true other page, it was no good for books or newspaper, if this leaf comes from a stamp album like it is mention, then Waltz would have had an album like the one i am showing or very similar, see photo it would measure about 4 x 6 inchs, theses where available in 1860's 1870's specially for stamps, the pages of theses books where made of wood pulp, many stamps from the 1800 are made from this kind of paper the reason some stamps looks like printed on both side, this is why postal service where using graphite or silver tip pen to cancel stamps at that time,

i am a Philatelist for over 50 years, the first thing you have to learn in stamps is the kind of paper they are made with and the kind of ink used, this give you the time frame an originality, you have to be able to find the fraudulent paper, i see things on stamps no one can see, like minors see things i cannot see,
now if no ones can see true the original paper how could Waltz have made a doodle to be read in reversed position, he would not have done this to his friends,
everyone that is searching with a reversed version are wasting there time and effort,

Sounds good, what are the odds of it originally being drawn on the opposite page, the right page and then being transferred onto the left page after it was closed? Sometimes all that schooling hinders your thought process because it makes you believe that all the training you had is all encompassing and absolute.
