I have been hunting an old coastal colonial site this week. Two hours afterwork on wensday, thursday, friday , and 4 hours this morning . I have hunted this area some before with a few decent finds made . Though scattered in hard digging ground with a lot of hot rocks around there are still a few things to find at this site . Wensday I hunted a big flat upper bench a ways from the foundation above the river and found a spot with a fair amount of wheaties 14 in two hours with only two modern silvers showing a 42 merc ,and a 52, rosie , And a few other trinkets but nothing old ! So thursday I went back to the foundation site hoping to pop a copper . I have yet to pop a Colonial copper from this site . I put the soverign in all metal since I already knew signals there are going to be few and far between . I made five finds there in a little less than 2 hours . Finally pulling an old copper that I knew right away was not normal . It looked Hammered . I figured the most likely canidate was a Spainish Maravedis because these are found some in north America . I also could see an SP on top of what I thought was a blured out shield . Ignoring the bust staring right at me ? After posting it in what is it ? The Brits resoundly say it is Roman . With Cru Dad confirming the I.D. . Crusader's best guess led to an online search hoping to find a match . Cru;s guess appears to be spot on. The Pic of the coin which seems to match up best is Roman Imperial- Vespian 69-79 A.D, Material : Bronze Weight 8.8gm 27mm in diameter . My coin is 26.97 mm. weighing in at 5.6 gms . The bust match looks pretty good ? What do you think Brits ?? The coin in the hand of course being the example > I know I am supposed to be looking for old coppers but this is ridiculous . How am I going to top a coin over 1900 years old . :tongue3: . What story led this coin to a Casco Bay Colonial site ?? Friday night back to the foundation area expanding outward. A flat button , An AMOCO 40 tag ? , gun sideplate piece, the ax and the funny looking piece with the S on it ?? Today I spent two hours on land and two hours on the river having a favorable tide . Still up on the bank I found found a shoe buckle frame and a small harness buckle, and the ornate peweter spoon that has seen it;s better days . The vine and leaf design goes down onto the blade as well . Age?? , A few other small finds and I went down to the river and comed the gravel . A .69 round ball , a .58 round ball turned into a sinker , Then I hit an area of the river that produced the copper Ingots which look really pure .The largest weighs in at 18.6 gms. Natural ?? Some more fishing lead and some other junk ! Thanks for looking ! MaineRelic

That's incredible MR!! Imagine how that coin got there. Cru knows more about old coins than anyone on Tnet. Great recovery, Quindy.

Wow, have fun topping that!! That is incredible!

Are you going to clean it up to verify the ID?
It looks like it is a match, if my amateur opinion counts for anything.

Such a shame you were looking for copper and had to settle for bronze. . . :laughing9:

Just never know what you'll find in the Colonies, great save.

I think I already over cleaned it Born free ! I think Anything else I do to this coin coin will detract detail . I cleaned it in warm peroxide using a natural bristle flux brush to dislodge stubborn deposits . I hated to but I did oil slick it for pics, I am just happy to get an I.D. scince it is worth almost nothing anyway . :laughing7: Thanks for looking M.R.

as you say, it will not clean anymore.

It's in the right range for size & weight of a 1st C AD AS (maybe into early 2nd), that has been worn & in the ground.
The bust looks to be Vespasian & the letters seem in the right place, as it's the Legend (letters) on the Obverse which inform any ID, without a certain amount of letters, the bust is not a reliable means of ID (but can help with his ugly mug).
I guess what Dad & I are saying, is we have 100% confidence in the denomination of the Roman Coin, but only 90% that it's the Emporer Vespasian.

Clearly looks like an 1st C As. And if Cru has it ided....
Its a nice one too. Who says You can't find romans in the states??? :icon_thumleft:

After Sentinel;s post of the Greek/Egyptian coin. 200 BC I believe. At a Colonial site in Virginia and the propensity of humans to lose or hide things .I know if you dig enough signals almost anything can show up anywhere ! M.R.

The sickle would make a good wall piece.

Button second pic bottom right looks interesting.

There's the proof!!! The Romans were here before the Vikings :laughing7: :laughing7:

Nice coin MR

Wow MR, that's certainly a cool find! Would love to know the story of how it was dropped.

way to go David .Only the MR could do that . Congrats ...How many of these are still around ?? Millions WHY doesn't a find like that even get a mention of banner? If this was found in Europe would the find be a better find? The chances of that coin traveling across the Atlantic to be lost in Maine have to hundreds of times greater that being lost in Europe..I just really don't understand this site and what excites people and what doesn't. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN and now go top that...................Goldbill

Trying sticking around & reading a little more. These don't excite me over here in Europe, I have already found over 700 this year. No-one would cry banner for this over here, because we are all in the know. Also, these turn up more in the US than you would expect (by plane loads of packages every day), stick around & find out the facts, then you will not need to make uninformed statements like the one above. The Ancient Roman's collected coins from places like Greece, the US collect from around the world & due to your love of history its a magnet for these.
Doesn't mean its not an interesting addition to the finders collection & it will be hard to beat, in terms of age. However, it has little/no historical value or monetary value. Those are the facts. I'm sure the finder doesn't think banner either :icon_scratch:

Hey Bill :hello: I appreaciate the support ! But my next Banner find is still in the field . I hope you don;t think Cru was being too hard on you but if you check out his posts you will see he finds more of these bronze coins than we find wheat pennys :laughing7: . Even a Roman silver has to be a rare specimen to make the Banner, I know on this side of the pond we have different standards and many North American Banner posts would recieve little attention if found in Europe . But this was just a curiousity coin for the person who droped it and now it is my curiousity coin And I am happy with that  However ! If it is possible to find a Roman bronze coin in N.A. than it is possible to find a Roman silver or gold coin in N.A. so I must go find that Banner coin now . M.R.
