I went out this morning for half an hour to detect in my yard. It feels like its 100 degrees out, humid, and no wind. The ground was rock hard wich made for difficult digging. Anyways found only some trash, and an old fashioned coke can. It was 5 inches deep. Anyways, after that hunt i started to dream about finding a huge cache of coins... and i got to thinking about how many caches there are burried in the ground. I realized that there must be alot but they continually get dug up by detectorists. Many caches are found each year, what happens when most of them or all of them have been discovered? Nowadays almost no one burries coins in coffee cains anymore. What will metaldetectors have to find in 50 years? Sure there will be old memorial cents and maybe if your lucky an older penny before 1982 that is mainly copper! Sound exciting doesnt it. With more and more coins being minted each year do to increased population there value is decreasing. In 50 years a 50 year old dime wont be worth anything compared to if we found a 50 year old dime now. I can just here our future kids and grandchildren saying "i went metal detecting the other day and found my oldest coin yet, an 1975 nickle!" Wow what a find, to bad that so many were minted it wont be worth anything. Which brings me back to caches, will there be no more left to find in 50 years? Im actually considering burrying a cache of $5 in nickels and pennies. Just think of how rewarding it will be to the guy with a metal detector in 50 years who finds it. I dont want the hobby to die off because everything good has been found. Considering all the stuff i find out of the ground it cant hurt me to much to burry a few bucks in change in a small can to make someones day 50 years from now. Immagine your kids and grandkids becoming detectorists and having nothing of value to find. It cant hurt to place a few modern coins in a can or glass bottle and burry it by an old tree, in your yard, by a playground, or even in the woods. I dont know, maybe im crazy but these are just my thoughts. Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post. Oh crud this doesnt really fit into todays finds does it? I cant retype this sorry Jeff and Marc.
