Today's finds....nothing special

Spent the last couple days checking out some new spots. One is a ball field and the other is in the woods near the spot I found a large cent a couple weeks ago. Didn't make any spectacular finds but had fun diggin targets. I did find something interesting I cant explain...maybe you guys can help. Here's the pics.

The plate of stuff lol....

Here's the only find that got the heart pumpin a bit. I love how the roots make a perfect ball in them...

All cleaned up and the hallmark...

So the ring is junk but still love finding them anyways. Thats ring #11 so far this year.

OK....here's the stumper. About 30 yards away from where I got the large cent I found this. I cant figure out for the life of me what it is or why it's there. It was completely covered in pine needles and anchored in a bedrock ledge. Any ideas? I thought maybe to tie up large animals like draft horses or oxen. But 2 feet away from it is a 6-8 foot drop off...wouldn't think it would be safe for critters. It's 1/4 mile from nearest water so not a boat tie off. Any info would be appreciated...

Although I didn't find anything spectacular.....I had a good weekend! Every day I get out swingin' is a GREAT day!

Maybe check Historic Aerials at an earlier date of the area...may have been a mooring ring for something. But you said the water isn't near enough for that? Hmm...well, there is a drop off...perhaps that was a supply route long ago...maybe this was used to help pull up heavy cargos...could have been a one time thing too. Maybe there was a pole of some sort near by, a beacon or lookout roost? The drop off there...is it like a valley...does it raise back on the other side...perhaps there was a hanging cable line going across? Look around..the answer might be there already. Try to find another one or evidence of another one...survey the area. What would you have used it for??

Also, from the looks of it...the ring can only swing back and forth in one direction...?? Assuming that can't or hasn't moved from it's original purpose...that 'might' give a clue to the direction a cable or rope might have been employed. Maybe it was used for some sort of recreational activity. Was this area ever a channel for water? Maybe it was used for logging cables?

Looks like they hitched horses to it.
