Today's MYSTERY RING - any help??!!

Of course I'm traveling (visiting my parents) and I didn't bring my gold kit along. I found this ring, which appears to have been re-sized and "fixed" (ruined) with solder.

Any opinions??!!!

I just love the Dragon motif on the side.

Are the dragon figures identical, or do they seem individually made? I see what looks to be excess metal around the dragons, which would indicate something coming from a fairly crude mold, but the design is elaborate enough to where I would say it has some value, precious metal or not. Maybe a hippie/fantasy ring from the 70s?

Interesting that someone bothered to get it sized (assuming the back of the shank isn't another casting error). Would think it's at least Sterling if
it survived that process.

EDIT:

Just took a closer look on my computer (was on my mobile earlier), now I think I see areas of dull gray metal all around; if that is the case the metal is most likely junk and in worse shape than I originally thought. Are those gray spots areas where pieces of metal have chipped away?

Other than the stone looking like amethyst, I have nothing to add.

I'll to get better pics from my husband's phone later and update the post. My camera phone does a decent job, but perhaps his will do a little better.

When you walk outside does the stone turn blue in the sunlight? And in the house it is purple. If that is the case this alexandrite. Which is a mix of amethyst and sapphire. I had one I just sold $1000.00. With 14k. It looks like that to me... But the blue to purple is the key and it's very sought after! If it's just purple all the time , it is amethyst. And the ring looks like it's 14k.

If it is 14 karat I would take it to a jeweler and have him solder in that line in the middle of the ring. Or clean it up to look smooth. There was one on eBay that sold not too long ago for $1700. It was opal though. That's nice! I love it! Nice find! Along with the Cartier pin!

some body tried to fix it at home and over heated it. an had no gold solder to use.

I agree, it's a bad attempt at a repair job by someone who shouldn't have even attempted it. I think it can be saved but you would need to take it to a qualified jeweler to have it done. It almost looks like someone added the dragons to a solitaire cocktail ring. Hard to tell though. Is there anything on the main body of the ring that matches the dragon motif in styling or pattern? It also looks like two different karat golds too. The dragons (and setting too, actually) look like 14k and the ring looks like 10k, could just be the photos though.

Do you have a test kit and can scratch it on the stone to test it? I think it's gold, although I have nothing to go on, looks like at least 10k. Might be wrong, but would have it tested to be sure.

I agree, something strange going on. I agree with diggummup , looks to be two different rings combined to make one. Could be some beginner getting into jewelry repair.

I tested the bottom last night (likely gold filled). I need to test the top later today as I didn't think to test more than one spot last night.

Looks like a good seller.
