Found this small token at a park in Champaign, Illinois today. I haven't been able to find anything to date it or determine what type of travel it was for. On one side it reads "GOOD FOR ONE FULL FARE" "U. & C. RY." ON THE OTHER SIDE "URBANA & CHAMPAIGN G. & E. CO." "U. & C. RY." Any ideas on age or means of travel?

Also found this 1961D cent today. The edge is very pronounced, much wider than the rest of the coin and rounded over rather than flat. It even cuts into the wording on the coin. Any significance to this?

Thanks!

Good call, Reddie!

The Urbana & Champaign [Illinois] Railway, Gas & Electric Company was founded in 1897 as the successor to the Urbana & Champaign Electric Street Railway. It was a trolley line with a total of nine route miles of track, operating until 1923, when it became part of Illinois Traction, Inc. There are reportedly at least five varieties of this token, and The Atwood-Coffee Catalogue of United States and Canadian Transportation Tokens, Fifth Edition (1996) lists it at 35¢. There's one on eBay right now at a starting bid of 99¢, so you might track that one and see what it brings:

I believe the cent is what's called a railroad cent, referred to because of it's resemblance to a railcar wheel, with the rim located away from the edge of the coin. I can't remember how it happens, but I think there's a pretty good description on www.pcgs.com.
