found this last week at an old house site that mostly produces 1850's stuff, but has also spit up the occasional KG copper and tombac button.
the item in question is lead, 1 1/8"-1 1/4" in diameter, 5/16" thick, and is printed on one side only. Can't read the writing well enough to make any conclusive key word searches. This piece is much larger than the usual lead seals I find, and also doesn't have any rust stains or wire visible that i tend to associate with lead seals. The edges are semi-uniformly rounded, thus quite blurry in the scan.
This one should be pretty easy for you guys.

Thanks,

Dwayne

Re: Big Lead Seal?

I hope someone else can do better because all I can see is "AND". The first thought that comes to mind is NEDERLAND. Does it look as if it would match? Another word that comes to mind on the left is WARRANTED. Just guessing.

:hello:

It's more like some kind of trade weight :icon_scratch: any chance of a picture from the side :) Possibly a bit like this one :icon_thumleft:

Re: Big Lead Seal?

Yes, seal or weight, and I have seen them much bigger than the average seal. Petty cool find in the US.

Re: Big Lead Seal?

here's a picture from the side. i was looking closer at that part that looks like "...LAND", and it actually looks like a series of symbols, the last two of which look like an upside down "V" and a ribbon shape that looks something like a cursive, lower-case L. The word following the symbols might be "BRANDT."

Now seing the side view, I'm convinced it's a trade or balance weight...Cool find :o

Re: Big Lead Seal?

cool! so probably a trade or balance weight. thanks Silver Searcher

before giving this thing the green check, i'm adding a rotated view of the first image, in hope that someone can make some sense out of the letters and symbols.

at the top, you can see "BRANDT" followed by something and then maybe an "ST." The mystery something might be an "I" or the number "1" or nothing at all. The scan makes it look different than it looks in hand. At the bottom of the pic, there is an "R", a dot, a mystery letter/number or two, then "AN(G?)EL."

any guesses?

thanks all,

D
