Update to all from Gemini-- Day One of my search has not been fruitful, but it has been a great experience. We're not done yet, however as we'll spend a few more hours looking tomorrow morning.

I'll give away my "process" since it my very likely be incorrect and I can't spend any more time after this trip but will trust if someone uses it and finds a token, they will remember the little person who helped them along the way:

Step One: I have not cracked the even code with one piece nary. But I do believe the sanctuary is a knothole for all the reasons mentioned already.

Step Two I have not cracked the code of numbers five to a side, either. But I do believe the name of where the treasures abide is 'National Forest' or 'National Park' or something like that. First, it is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Forest Service. Second, what other publicly accessible forestland (the jewels are in the forest, remember) has people in 13 different locations who could periodically monitor the status of the tokens, replace one with a substutute if a squirrel carries one off, etc. And doesn't it make sense given the theme of the book that Stadther's goal would be to drive us all into the national forests to enjoy them, appreciate them and perhaps witness first-hand the destruction underway, as I have seen today with my own eyes? A far more noble objective I think than putting them in highway rest stops or even city parks.

Step Three With name (National Forest) in hand the faeries know and they will show us where to go. But which fairies and which forests? Well there are precisely 13 jewels and there are 13 chapters that begin with a fairy pointing at something within the initial cap box. So, might the letter in that initial cap box be the initial letter of the national forest where a token is hidden? And might the dark lines that we see tangled within the vines of the initial cap (but different from them) be the precise road or hiking trail within that national forest/park? And might the precise spot fairy is pointing to be the tree with the knothole with the token is?

OK - -Turn to page 16-Chapter One and note the inital cap box. Now you understand why I am at Zion National Park in southern Utah, a park which has a GROTTO as a major feature, as well as (and this is what REALLY prompted me to get on a plane) another major feature called (take one more look at the visual) CHECKERBOARD MESA. Since this is one of the few inital caps in the book with no 'twisting road' to speak of in it, I'm assuming the 'checkerboard' is the landmark here.

There is a tree at the base of that mesa which is a dead ringer for the tree in the picture (splits in the middle then reconverges near the top)--EXCEPT no knothole that I could find- alas. I thought certain it would be the tree with the token. Anyway, there are two other nearby areas I will look into in the morning which could be worthwhile hiding places. If someone gets there before me at this point because I have spilled the process, they were meant to find it.

Finally, using my process, I have discovered at least 6 or 7 other locations which coincidentally has the fairy pointing to some feature etc within a national forest or park that contains the word Jewel, Crystal, Oak or some derivation of those in its name. Perhaps amazing coindidence. Perhaps not.

Sorry about the long post. Zion is spectacular so even if I don't find the token it has been a very worthwhile trip. If all comes to no avail tomorrow, I'll share the other locations I think are possibilities (one in California and one in Virginia seem AMAZINGLY worthwhile checking out). Thanks for all the attaboys and lets keep hunting.

Gemini

Gemini, thanks for being so generous with your ideas and conclusions. We are still hoping that you will be the one to find the first token, so get up early and keep looking!

Gemini - I am checking two sites in VA tomorrow. I am convinced VA is one of the locations for a couple of reasons. One is that I know that Richmond is within 500 miles of 50% of the US population. There are a lot of clues that I think point here. So.....let's see how tomorrow goes. ZUSE

Gemini and Zuse good luck on both your hunts tomorrow and let us know how it all goes i'm sure we'll all be thinking of you all out there . good luck.

good luck gemini and zuse,
hope both of your hunts go well....for the rest of us still scratching our heads i have a small observation to discuss. In the forward MS refers to" fairies" but later inthe second paragraph says" fairy tail".....shouldn't it be" fairie tale" if he is following his pattern of using olde english?

sorry i meant he uses fairy tale" not fairie tail" page 10
that might be an even code (10)with one piece nary(an intentional misspell?)

once again sorry but there are several references to the spelling "fairy" on pages 36, 40.....
man just when you think you have something .......

good luck Gemini and Zuse!!
I hope that the weather is great for you both. The best thing to have happen would be to see a 'glint' in a tree. I do hope that on of you finds something.

Anyboby else out there getting ready to sprint of into the night on the hopes of discovering a token? I hope so.

I am going to head out tomorrow. A place close by to me that is not a national forest but the oldest public park in texas...it does have a "sanctuary" a gift store called the Treasure Tree, a moon viewing deck, a bridge called the checkerboard bridge and a moon bridge. I don't know exactly where I will be looking. I'll see if something looks familliar when I get there. It only has 109 acres. So I think a couple hours of ringing around the rosey around trees should do it - huh?

Hey Finderskeepers2k5, I live close to that park also. Someone on the official site had a post about going there with no luck. It does look like a good spot,I have thought of going there it's been a long time sense I have been there.I hope you have some idea of where it might be.GOOD LUCK! If anything you should have a great day and with all the events going on in our area it should not be too busy.

Salkns, your pm is full!

Thanks for everyone's good wishes, but today was a bust. I posted on the Dead Ends thread. The good news is that it was a glorious day! It probably has been 20 years since I've been in that part of the state, so I guess something good came out of the day anyway. (I'd feel better, though, if I could find one of the tokens!) Zuse

Finderskeepers, good luck !!!!!!

Zuse , sorry your hunt didn't produce a token , but it sounds like you had a good time anyway.

hey zuse,
?Sorry the hunt was a bust, ? bummer i was hoping you would have had better luck but glad to hear you had a good time anyhow.I'm just sitting down to bang my head against the book again

ALL , I was tracing the tree and things on pg. 46 and came across snail and butterfly . i made a copy of the front and back so you can find it easier . i posted ithem on the other pages , but figured it was so dead here i'd post it here also . let me know what you all think . I also think the darker area in the tree above the snail also resembles a snail . sorry just noticed so i'm off to trace again. let me know what you think . carol

Zuse- Sorry that your hunt did not go well. Better luck next time.

Carol- Everyday you amaze me with your findings. I can't wait for the day when they all come together. Hopefully we won't have to wait until 2007.

Sorry to post again but I wanted to say some words of encouragement for those of you who have now been out on the hunt. I know from experience how disappointing it is to walk away without the token. But remember that the needle will be found; and, everytime you go out you get better at looking in spots that you would ordinarily not take notice of. Especially the beauty that the nature around you has to offer. That in itself is a treasure. Keep your hopes up and don't give up!
