Turn off detector while digging?

Say you have a pin pointing too // While digging the deeper more problem items, who turns off their detector to save batteries?

I find that I sometimes turn off my detector when digging deeper items especially if the soil is hard-packed and or has rocks as these digs tend to take longer..

If I have sensitivity set high on my machine, I just aim the coil away from the find, I usually put it at arms length.

I'm not sure if a Detector coming back online uses more power or not but,
If anything I would think you are putting undue stress on the On/off switch unless you
only dig 1 target a day.

Pinpointers don't last as long without service, as detectors,
what if this is due to turning then off & on continuosly ?

I don't turn off my detector unless I am done detecting. If you aren't using rechargeable batteries, you should be!

I just flip my switch to the probe and the target is mine!!!!!!

I have a habit of GB my detector and checking the connection as it turn it on. I would spend more time GB than digging. The F75 is deep, and great on battery's. GB is very important, and the F75 will let you know if you got it wrong. Head phones, now that's something I would like to throw in the lake sometimes.

I owned a machine it the 70's that had a mercury switch - when you set it down it went off - it would save batteries

I use the DFX300, which is a battery hog, I go to the menu when digging.

I have an older DFX and I have no problem with batteries. I have about 20 hours on the rechargeable pack and it still shows 8.7 volts on start up. Check the date code on your battery pack, the first 3 numbers are the days of the year and the last number is the year. ( ex 1500 means the 150th day of either 2000 or 2010.) Those of us who have hunted, on more than one occasion, for extended periods of time without remembering to turn our detectors ON, are understandably reluctant to turn them off while we dig.

Susan, After you ground balance you are supposed to have a background hum called the "threshold." That way you know your machine turned on. That also helps with a sunray probe, helping the operator to remember to flip the switch from probe back to detector.

I set my machine semi close to my dug hole and sometimes swipe handfuls of dirt next to my coil to see if the target is in that handful or not, instead of probing around with the pinpointer all the time.
