TV NISSAN Ad .... Do You see what I see ?

One of my pet peeves is people mispronouncing the word "the" before words that start with a vowel, which should sound like "thee" and not "thuh." "Thee" apple, "thuh" car. Heard Michelle Bachmann do it today. ::)

More common ones: "Nupchoo-uhls" for nuptials, "Reediculous" for ridiculous and my biggest complaint - DE-fense in sportscasting. You don't DE-fend your country. A lawyer doesn't DE-fend his client. It's de-FEND and de-FENSE.

Thank you.

thats what happens when you start outsourcing ad work to countries where english is not the first language * seen many chinese diners (in the usa) with horrible spelling errors .-- some places on outdoor signs spell things wromg as a "eye grabber" it works too -- noticed wromg * bet you did. :icon_thumright:

I think the next time I go to a Mexican place I'll order the "po-lo kwes-a-dillas." :tongue3:

well in spanish theres a big differance betweem a chimichanga and a jimmychinga * --had I saw a very large southern gal with a whole 9 weeks of spanish classes under her belt from a nearby local jr college try to show off her new found spanish skills at a local mexican place that has rather good food --my freind and I about died laughing (as did the waiters) when she ordered a "jimmy chinga" instead of a chimichanga-- when the waiters told the cook who was named jimmy that the gal out front wanted a "jimmy chinga" - jimmy looked out and said "no mas senorita gordo"

Can be fun Butchering all Languages :laughing7:

Well, the fact that we (the US) is a melting pot, also affects how things are said, too, though, you would think that, by now, a more subtle influence of countries would have shown itself by now.

Nope, just the opposite. Frankly, ever since "Ebonics" became acceptable, we can all feel free to butcher the language. When I was much younger, we celebrated the fact that Webster put the word "ain't" in the dictionary. Now............whewwwww!

We butcher it in meaning, in spelling and in pronunciation.

My biggest peeve for the English language is the word "heighth". There is no such word. It is "height, height, height" No TH at the end. All sorts of folks make this mistake, from private to professionals.

My second language pet peeve...... Nobody knows how to use the word "myself". 'Jim and myself' is not proper English. It is not a pronoun - let me rephrase that - it's not supposed to be a pronoun, but, now, it is used as a pronoun. And OMG, now we cannot spell outright anymore - like L8er.

In Pa, growing up - we had direeee (diarrhea), mangos (green peppers) heyner or no (isn't it).

Oh, well,

Beth

Language is a living entity. It grows, it changes, it blends and sometimes some of it dies.

Certain words or phrases become "en vogue" one day as a word or phrase becomes "archaic" the very same day.
The true gist of language is in UNDERSTANDING the current phrases and meanings. The study of language is fascinating and I encourage all to further delve into the subject for a better understanding of language---How people (and animals) communicate.

Best,
Scott

Whell,
Guess I've said enough... :tongue3:

It's the same people who send us all those free millions spam emails. Making cars is a sideline.

There's a simple way to figure out if you should use "me", "I" or "myself", just break down the sentence to the individuals.

Deconstructing "Jane and (me/myself/I) are going to the Pauly Shore movie" to each person makes it clear:

"Jane is going..." <---perfectly fine.

"Me is going...", "Myself is going..." <----Wrong!

"I am going..." <----Yes!

I've heard the "language evolves" argument many times but one thing no one can seem to answer, is does it devolve. When I see a rap CD titled "Word of Mouf", is that evolving?
