I went MDing with my aunt this morning (Wednesday) at a local park where me and my dad found the wheat pennies. We went earily in the morning to visit the high traffic area that includes the kids playground. We detected everywhere in the area except the playground itself, and as luck would have it, it was a waste of time.
I found 2 zincolns and Hot Wheels car stamped 1998 (the #32 El Segundo Missile) - turns out the car was actually made in 2009 and is #9 of the set. She found nothing but a couple of pull tabs, it seemed it was almost completely wiped clean as even in all metal mode nothing was really showing up at all.
So we tried detecting the wheat penny area. She has the same MD as him a Garrett Ace 250, and she found a 1937 Buffalo Nickel and a 194? Mercury dime (last digit was smashed in by coin rim damage). Last but not least she found a braclet that was made of small copper squares and each had a scence painted on them (there were 10 or 11 segments total, the links joining them were mostly gone).
My finds included 33 pull tabs (my new record of a single hunt), 2 more pennies, and a 1964 nickle.
After some appointments and errands today my 4" Gold Nugget coil was delivered. My family laughed as it was put onto my MD, it really is that tiny. Well after a quick search in the backyard (where my aunt detected, my dad, and myself - we all thought there was nothing much left) I found 9 pennies, 1 dime, a MENTHOLATUM tube (stamped in the metal around the cap area), some various objects, and a large spring clamp. The change was scattered in two pocket spills and some pennies at random places - and this was just a small test (1 hour max) of the new coil I ran out of sunlight to do it all.
I can't wait to try the park again now with my new 4" coil!
I am still getting the same depth of about 5" on coins as I did with the stock 8" coil, but the 4" coil has really increased the detection of items in the ground. I would recommend a small coil for anyone looking to get more out of a detector. After my dad seen me discover several coins in a pocket spill in the area he searched before, he can't wait to order one for his MD.
