Two "Spills" in One Day...
...found by my daughter of course
. Got caught up gettin' things done "in-house" last night so I'm posting yesterday's digs now. Had a chance to hunt most of the day yesterday with Izzy and boy did we hunt. We started out at one of the lakes we fish at and had some pretty decent luck there. Found out that there once was a little boat rental building on the property. A bit of searching and I was able to find the remnants of the foundation. Iz and I started walking the lines (she was the "pinpointer" yesterday) and soon we were diggin'. First target we dug was a 1910 Wheatie that was all sorts of worn and "dished" a little on one end. Aside from the black stuff (?) on the top edge, it's pretty clean. Dug a few pop tops and a pull tab in the next couple of holes. Started to make our way down the other side of the foundation (actually just a line of mostly buried bricks now) and got a solid mid-tone target coming up as a penny. Swept across it two or three times to pinpoint and the tone started to go back and forth between low and mid. trying not to get a little frustrated, I dug. And dug. Dug some more (whew! it was HOT yesterday). About six inches later, Izzy stuck the pinpointer in the "mush" and we heard that wonderful buzz. Izzy of course, practically hip-checks me out of her way so she could get dirty and find whats making all that noise
. I'm thinking pulltab or iron and she comes up with a '42 Nickel and a '43 Steely!!! Sweet! Two for one sale! I've obviously been teaching her well because she put the probe back in and started "swishing" around again. "BUZZZZZZ!" I'm flippin' out just because of the two in one deal and she pulls two more '43 wheats! I was floored to say the least and she was hilarious - thought there might have been a "treasure chest" in there somewhere. I'm thinkin' an old pocket spill but what got me was there were no coppers! First steels for the Iz and I, and first "spill" as well. I swear I wanted to go get a backhoe and excavate the whole area
!!! God help me when she's able to walk with her detector by herself ! I believe she'll put a hurtin' on me. We pretty much stayed within the "building" area and dug some more "junk". The only notable item after the spill was this small bullet - I believe it's a .22 (please correct me if I'm wrong). We decided to take a lunch break and headed off to a different spot. Went by one of the many now-defunct furniture plants on the outskirts of town and found one of the gates open. This one in particular has an old pool area that was once used by employees of the company (must have been nice workin' there!) back in the '50s and '60s from what I've been told. Curiosity got the better of me and I drove in hoping to find someone to talk to and maybe get permission to MD the pool area. Found an older gentleman that takes care of the grounds and runs a sandblasting shop on one of the back lots. We got to talking and he told me to "go right ahead" but to make sure I fill in my holes. I assured him they would be filled and we headed over to the pool area. I'm going to try and get by there today to get some pics to post. This place is so freakin' cool! Didn't find much in the way of coins - got a decent '44 wheat - but plenty of old pulltabs. We didn't hit it too hard there because the sun was starting to get to the both of us and Iz was becoming a bit irritable (just like a woman
). All in all, we had a lot of fun and a lot of excitement (with the spill). It was great to get out and finally find some good old coins. Once again, I learn something new with every "hunt".
By the way, of course my daughter (certainly not me!) finds a 47 cents "spill" in the parking lot at the grocery store on our way home...
