did you try putting a rope through it just to see if anything happens? i dont understand the rollers.
The rope goes through the small opening and gets pinched between the rollers when tension is applied.
Release the tension and the rope begins to slide through again allowing control of the heavy object on the other end.
Of course, I'm just guessing...

It rolled on a single track of steel they would pull up the load, then roll it into the loft. Repeat as needed until loft was full.
