what was the total haul? how many ax heads?

15 intact axes 4 broken axes 4 adzes 1 what looks like a ho and 4 large points/spears

15 axes....i would pee my pants to find one!

Yea me too.... Thats been on my bucket list ever since I started hunting... Maybe this will be the year...... At least I know they are still out there

If I had found that many Native American Indian Artifacts in such a short time and there are no more visible, I would pay the farmer to plow the field again, then ask him to wait until after the next rain and a day or two of searching for more artifacts before he plants. What a haul! Is it possible that the site was what we call here an Indian Blacksmith Shop where tools, arrowheads and spearheads were made? There was one across the river from my brother-in-laws sister's home in Sevier County, Tennessee and every time they plowed the field there, hundreds of arrowheads and a few spearheads could be found. When the field was plowed, the next day some folks would arrive at the site a couple of hours before daylight to be the first one's out there searching. The farmer let this go on for years but then he sold the land and the new owners posted everything. You can still occasionally find arrowheads and spearheads in the river and along it's banks on that side of the river.

What kind of polish did you put on them to make them shine up? Hard stone is a grainy type of lithic. Its okay to put mineral oil on flint and it wont hurt it but a grainy type it can hurt and change the color of the artifact.

Outstanding ground for sure, I've gotta think it's not seen a plow very often until lately. At any any rate, congrats. to your friend!

One reason I would doubt an "Indian blacksmith shop" is the axes all look like they were used, rather then in a state of manufacture/unused finished product. But in such a tiny area, that was one of my thoughts as well. Here the men sat fashioning tools designed for cutting and working wood. One acre is such a tiny postage stamp. It's almost like here's where all the men were storing their tools, but I doubt that's the answer, either. If you go back and hunt carefully for the missing flint, and find none, that is a headscratcher. But it is one that we all would love to have no doubt:-)

It might sound funny but it could be just that the farmer moved all those big "rocks" off to the side of the field so he didn't hit them

Not a bad idea at all. That is one of the requirements of me walking the fields I hunt now. I toss them to the side they are caked with mud or crusted with dirt. They get rain on them all season then in the winter I go have a look. That is how I find a lot of my hammers and Divot stones :)

Maybe she found " the wood pile" spot off to the side of the main camp.

Yea I have been trying to come up with different scenarios .... The farmer theory makes sense but some of the items you would think they would have picked up and kept .... There's several axes found within feet of each other as well as spears/large points. Another thing that helped is we received 5+ inches of rain the night they plowed. So the field was still wet . I have been out there since and it's very difficult to see with everything dried and covered in dust.

Where's the points?,tools? Any flint

Gator : I must not have taken any pics of the points .... I will next time I see them. There was some tools found .... A few grinding stones but I don't think any flint has been found

A well deserved congrats!!! A long time coming ;) Good on you  Looking forward to seeing the points too!

If you don't collect artifacts you really dont look for them. The farmer might not even look for them to be more than just another darn rock hitting the blades. Here there are so many fields you could look if they would give permission. Most of the farmers see me as annoying or getting in their way. Its hard to get permission.
