Today I went back over to the 190 acre property I've been detecting for years. With deer season finally over I am able to safely get back out into the woods again. :icon_thumleft: H-ll bent on finding some CW relics I headed over to a wooded spot where I've dug some CW lead in the past. Some of you may remember this video from a few years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzPaj5UjKWI
With Union troops camped in the area for about three months towards the end of the war, I know there just had to be more to be found.
After digging up many shotgun shell & .22 cal brass I hit on a deep signal. Digging down and then probing I pulled out a Williams cleaner bullet. :icon_thumleft: Rescanning there was another signal. Yep, another Williams cleaner. Yet, another signal and BINGO a third Williams cleaner all within a foot of each other.
By this time the sun was gone, the sky got dark, the wind started whipping through the trees, and it started snowing. :BangHead:
I then started gridding off the area and about 10 minutes later I got another sweet deep signal. This time it was right up next to a thick vine. After breaking through numerous roots I pulled out a melted piece of lead, and then a 3-ringer, another piece of melted lead, and another 3-ringer, and then more melted lead. I believe I found the campfire location.
Eventually I stopped getting signals around that fire area. :(
My other finds were a small buckle and an unknown piece of copper. :dontknow:
This new hot spot today was only about 100' from where I dug the 20 bullets in the video. It was lower on the hill and closer to the dried up stream.
It snowed off and on most of the afternoon on me. Windy & cold.
Now here's the spooky part..........when I was out there by myself digging these relics, I swear to God I heard what sounded like a horse galloping!!! I looked up, but nothing was there. :o Freaked me out!
By the way, I must have dug close to 100 shotgun shell and 22 cal. brass in that area. It was driving me nuts. :tongue3:
A great day it was being able to recover these bits of history.
Thanks for looking,
MM

Thanks Scott. I come from a long line of comedians. My Dad was the king though. ;D Always making us laugh.
As far as "Always a laugh from you..." That's what the wife told me the other night in the bedroom. :o :laughing9:

I never thought of a candle holder. :icon_scratch: Good guess. I'll try to unfold it a bit today and see if there are any mysteries unlocked by doing so.
I feel fortunate to be here in NC with some CW history in the area. Nothing like Virginia of course, but enough to keep me busy. :icon_thumleft:
Have a great week,
Doug

Great looking relic's Doug. The kepi buckle might be Confederate,I know both side's had them but that doesn't explain the Cleaner's :icon_scratch: Could just be an Officer's Kepi ?

Joe,
I was just putting away some relics away in my CW displays and realized that I already had a small buckle like the one I just dug. Now I have TWO. ;D

Nice bullets!!

Thanks TD.
I still love finding CW bullets no matter how much some some relic hunters think of them as a common find. Still pieces of our history. :icon_thumleft:

You got that right Thrilla,
Old "Tessie" never lets me down. She's has paid for herself many, many times over. For a $235 machine you can't beat it.

Great finds Doug.

Sorry I didn't make it up there to hunt with you!!! Great spot for sure. Look forward to better weather soon

Alright DOUG my man. Looks like you've found a nice producing site and looks fairly open. I love woods hunting when the woods are nice and open. Great pics and videos my friend and I appreciate the 'welcome' back on my post bruthaman~ :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

What great looking W.Cleaners. I never dig any that nice. Wonder if they carved the center one down? Nice lead and buckle.

Joe,
No problem. When we do get together we can either hit this spot for CW relics or the 1820's house, your choice.

Thanks Josh. Yep, this place is a huge open woods with hills and both dried up and active streams running through it. Most of my carved bullets were found very close to this spot, along with some huge chunks of melted lead.
Welcome back,
Doug

Now that is a classic! I may have to have one of my buds in the UK pick me up one of those. I bet my wife would love it too. :laughing9:
Thanks Scott

Thanks TnM,
The bullets I find are always drops, so I guess I am lucky. I think the fired bullets may not look as pretty but they have a bit more meaning. I am puzzled by that smaller based WC too. :dontknow: Maybe carved by a bored soldier. :icon_scratch:

Another great hunt by MM.
You and Brad are having a good year, you should of had him take a photo of you for us. :laughing7:
Good Luck and watch out for the Headless Horseman. :help:
