Today I went back over to the 190 acre property I've been detecting for years. With deer season finally over I am able to safely get back out into the woods again. :icon_thumleft: H-ll bent on finding some CW relics I headed over to a wooded spot where I've dug some CW lead in the past. Some of you may remember this video from a few years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzPaj5UjKWI
With Union troops camped in the area for about three months towards the end of the war, I know there just had to be more to be found.
After digging up many shotgun shell & .22 cal brass I hit on a deep signal. Digging down and then probing I pulled out a Williams cleaner bullet. :icon_thumleft: Rescanning there was another signal. Yep, another Williams cleaner. Yet, another signal and BINGO a third Williams cleaner all within a foot of each other.
By this time the sun was gone, the sky got dark, the wind started whipping through the trees, and it started snowing. :BangHead:
I then started gridding off the area and about 10 minutes later I got another sweet deep signal. This time it was right up next to a thick vine. After breaking through numerous roots I pulled out a melted piece of lead, and then a 3-ringer, another piece of melted lead, and another 3-ringer, and then more melted lead. I believe I found the campfire location.
Eventually I stopped getting signals around that fire area. :(
My other finds were a small buckle and an unknown piece of copper. :dontknow:
This new hot spot today was only about 100' from where I dug the 20 bullets in the video. It was lower on the hill and closer to the dried up stream.
It snowed off and on most of the afternoon on me. Windy & cold.
Now here's the spooky part..........when I was out there by myself digging these relics, I swear to God I heard what sounded like a horse galloping!!! I looked up, but nothing was there. :o Freaked me out!
By the way, I must have dug close to 100 shotgun shell and 22 cal. brass in that area. It was driving me nuts. :tongue3:
A great day it was being able to recover these bits of history.
Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice finds MM! I thought your buckle was a kepi buckle, but it's a lot fancier than any I've seen, so I'm not sure. Keep up the good work recovering and preserving!

Thanks JR.
This property has turned up a big variety of relics so I'm not sure on the buckle either. Yesterday I dug an 1930's Japanese coin out in another section of the woods. Talk about strange! :dontknow: ;D

You were overdue for CW relics MM and you dug some nices ones. Dropped Williams Cleaners will made nice additions to your collection. That's an ornate little buckle too. The galloping you thought you heard was your mind thinking about "The Galloping Gourmet" and dinner at Carabas tonight-LOL. HH, Quindy.

My detecting buddies and I were out this afternoon in Franklinton. We got snowed on too. We found a bunch of modern lead and shells, nothing good. Glad to see you got out and found some good stuff! :icon_pirat:

Nice post and finds MM! HH, Mike

Good recoveries :icon_thumright:

Nice bunch of lead.

Great looking relic's Doug. The kepi buckle might be Confederate,I know both side's had them but that doesn't explain the Cleaner's :icon_scratch: Could just be an Officer's Kepi ?

that is a nice buckle! congrats

Great Digs!!! My guess is part of a funnel......

Awesome finds! I'm in TN right now, hope to find some CW beauties.

And about the horses galloping -- that has happened to me, too. One quiet night my daughter and I were searching an area where the Butterfield Stage use to run and all of a sudden there was the sound of horses galloping. We both turned to see if horses were coming, so we could get out of the way; it was that real. Of course, there were no horses. Nothing. It was really startling. We just stood silent for a few minutes. Then I thanked them for coming by, told them they were not forgotten; and thanked God. Then we just listened for a couple of minutes. All quiet and we resumed our search. Eeks!

Nice finds you old "Jack Wagon" :laughing7: Is that snow I see behind you? Some nice CW bullets you have there Doug. Good for the soul to get out and hunt in the winter :icon_sunny: Get ready for this next round of winter..........Atlanta, 6 inches of snow :o Talk about the end of the world comming soon :dontknow:

Thanks Q. I'm glad to have found more CW bullets because I'm trying to fill in the empty spots in one of my display.
The bullets I find are always drops or melted lead. I think I've only found one fired bullet, and that was the one I sent you a picture of about a week ago from a totally different location. I only spent 5 minutes in that field. I'll have to get back over there and look for more.
Any idea why the base of that one Williams cleaned is so small? (not uniform either) :dontknow:
Carraba's was great last night. No galloping horses, but I drank a pony keg. Just kidding. ;D

Joe,
We are lucky here in NC to have such mild winters. I was actually sweating a bit out in the woods digging through roots to get to the lead. ;D

Thanks Mike.
I'm hoping to hit on a few more hot spots in that camp area. I still need a US buckle. No battle there, so hopefully a soldire misplaced one.

Thanks D.
It was a thrill to hit on another good spot believe me. A bit eerie out there detecting by myself with that snow, wind, and thoughts of CW soldiers. If someone would have tapped me on the soldier I would have soiled myself. :o
I hope to see you back in action soon. Quindy really misses you. Has he made you an "get well soon" cards? :tongue3:

I know this property (originally part of a 640 acre plantation) has been active since the late 1700's so maybe the buckle was dropped by someone else.
I hope it's CW related, but who knows? :dontknow: I still think that big iron Eagle piece that I sent you is CW related, or at least was carried by Union troops. It was also found on this property closer to where I've dug a lot of bullets, buttons, etc.

Could possibly be. I find a lot of farm related stuff out in these woods too. I must have dug 50-100 plow pieces at this place. :'(

MM,
Thanks so much for telling that story of hearing horses too. At least I'm not the only one. One of my close friends on here (I won't mention any names, but it starts with a "Q" ;D) thought I was nuts. The sound of the horse galloping was so real it gave me the chills, and not just because it was snowing. ;D Some things in life we just can't explain.
Thanks again,
Doug
