Hello All,

There is an upcoming coin show in my area and I was thinking of trying to trade up some 40%ers for SAEs or silver bullion. My question is: would dealers be willing to do this and what would be a good trade? [200] 40%ers equates to 29.6 ounces of silver so would it be a good trade for 29 SAEs or other bullion or is that too much on the side of the dealer? Would a dealer do this number one and number two is this a good deal? Thoughts and prior trade experiences appreciated!!!

40%ers tend to trade at less than spot, and ASEs trade a few dollars over spot. I don't know of any dealer who would make that trade.

At the coin show I went to, most dealers were not all that interested in purchasing junk 40%ers. I think you are better off finding the best cash price for 40%ers, then taking that cash to buy ASEs.

I just traded 2 rolls of 40% for several SAE's at a show a week or so ago. One of the dealers I spoke to there had a bunch of eagles for sale, a dollar over melt. Wish I'd bought more.

Best case you get $5.00 on the 40%. More like $4.62 on Feebay after fees. Eagles were selling $39 to $40 at show I went to this weekend. I would expect more like 20 SAE's You have to ask yourself why would a Dealer trade a known seller for a so so seller like 40% without having profit.

I guess you make a valid point. What about trading [7] 40%ers and $1 or $2 for an SAE - does that sound reasonable? The ad for the coin show says the dealers would like to trade and do free appraisals so I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

p.s. - I have never been to a coin show before in my life so this will all be new to me.

It just sounds to me like the dealers, along with Ebay sellers, can't keep pace with the price increases lately of PM's. At the show I was at a week ago, deals could be found, like Peace dollars and Walkers at or slightly below melt. I ignored or laughed at a couple of comments like, "you know I'm not making a dime on that one".

Im selling eagles right now about as fast as i get them for $40 when silver is over 36 an oz and $39 when it dips into the $35. Problem is I cant get them fast enough and ordering them costs me $40 a coin after shipping. I can buy 40% below melt from the same place charging me $3 over melt for eagles and they are out of eagles and have more 40% than i can stand if that gives you any help.

$ilver$urfer,
A month or two ago I traded $350 face in 40% for 3 $10 and 1 $5 Gold coins -- mixed dates 1880's to 1912. Not a killer deal, but both the dealer and I came away with a good deal. He made some profit, so did I. Biggest advantage, more, much more room in the safe.
Walk the floor at the coin show, and see what deals folks will offer. You won't be able to command spot, but you'll likely learn a lot, and may find a reasonable deal.
Best wishes,
Steve

I am thinking at this weekend's show, I'll be lucky to get 85/roll. I am glad to think people might offer 100!
I agree with the poster that pointed out a hidden advantage of trading your 40's for gold, even if you lose a slight premium to the dealers - your safe deposit box will thank you!!

That answer is relative to where you are, some coin shows give better prices then others. just make sure you talk to all the dealers before committing.

I was quoted $95 a roll for 40% today. I'm getting the itch to sell some. :icon_scratch:
