TEKNETICS T-2 LTD, Fisher F-75, White's MXT w/ 11 x 14" Excelerator Coil, WHITES Pulse TDI, WHITES Beach Hunter ID, Garrett Propointer and Lesche Digging Tool
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Whats up all. Well, I went back to an old spot that a buddy of mine and I use to hunt last year. This place has been hit hard and by alot of detectorists who are in the know and know where this spot is located. Not to mention, one part of the site has been littered with trash for about 60 years. Well, I just went out there and really concentrated and took my time and tried to find any leftover stuff that may have been out there. We had dug some NICE things out there in the past but since then it has been really hammered.
Still enjoyed the day and came out with this:

  • A really cool OLD hatchet blade that I found over near the Confederate Redoubt. (It has been halfway cleaned) I really was happy with this find
  • One small piece of 6lber shrapnel in the upper lefthand corner
  • Two pieces of camp lead in the middle
  • One musket ball
  • A CURIOUS piece that looks like the KEYSTONE STATE symbol. This is brass and would love to know if anyone has found one like this before. I found one at another site that was shaped differently but had the same 'notch' in the side of it like this one does
  • In the upper right corner, this piece at first glance looks like a piece of shrapnel but after looking at it close it clearly isnt. It does not have the correct curvature to it to be a piece of cannonball shrapnel.
  • In the bottom left, this piece may be some sort of gun tool or something. Not sure what it will be until I clean it up abit.

It was a good hunt and nice to get out and see the old redan (redoubt) and the old 18th century cemetery but this is a place that will definitely be checked off the list for awhile. ;) ;) HH

Updated at midnight: Here are the cleaned pictures of the axe blade. I must say, I have never seen one quite like this one. I dont know if it was a repair or what but check out the end that is suppose to go onto the shaft. It is VERY odd indeed with two metal pieces bolt or something to it.

Re: Old Spot produces a couple Keepers

The relic on the lower right looks like an axe head Sentinel. Let us know how it turns out after cleaning.

Re: Old Spot produces a couple Keepers

It might be an Old Spot there....but they are alway's giving up Josh....Still some cool piece's of History,I have a few spot's like that and they have been hit pretty hard but I pulled my first LC out of the field that has been hammered.Persistance pay's off again.HH!!

Yo, {Sentinel}, what's up, man? Dude, it just shows you that those old sites will still produce the keepers. Keep on swinging with the fever, man!

Oh Yeah, you know it and I agree. Those hammered spots DO still produce and I will go back there again later on down the line. But I have this New place that Is producing very well right now so I am goins to concentrate on it for right now! BTW CivilMan, Antietam dang sure wont be hunted 'out' anytime soon. It is probably a tough day to get them but you still are! ;)

Zoy, I agree, 100% hard core detectin is what our breed are ALL about! And you are right as well; they are still out here. I was definitely doing some of that John Walter (Is THERE ANY OTHER KIND) type detectin yesterday: Slow, steady, and methodical ;) ;) ;)

Re: Old Spot produces a couple Keepers

Very nice finds Sentinel----That axhead has to be very old.

Re: Update: Cleaned Axe Head: Old Spot produces some Keepers!

Updated with finished axe blade. Has alittle minor cleaning left but this is almost ready to be sprayed now. I would say that it is a mid 1800s era axe head if I had to guess as to the era.

That is unusual...it looks like someone split the axe head in the usual spot they break--right in front of the handle hole, towards the blade...then they machined off the broken spot, and attached a handle using bolts...that is just wierd. I don't think I've seen one like that...maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Do those holes go all the way through the head? It could be a temporary patch of the break perhaps.

Interesting find.

Will, indeed they do go all the way through the head. It is weird though because the blade is round on the end. If you look close, it looks like a half circle. Then, it looks like that was 'inserted' between the unidenitfiable pieces and then bolted through or soldered through. I have never found one like this either. It definitely is 19th century blade but I have to say I was really stumped when I cleaned the rust away to find the end looking like that :D

Josh,
Congrats on the relics. That axe head is very cool.
Is it just me or does this piece you found look like part of a bull fighter or a golfer swinging his club? ;D
Great job,
Doug

Think the "added on" side piece's were supposed to act like a wedge to help split smaller log's Josh....Only thing I can think of.It is kinda unusual....

Civil, that is a great observation Bud. I had thought about that yesteday myself but kinda dismissed it because I had no one to back me up on it plus I had never found another one like it before....That could be valid as well. ;)

MM.....Yeah, I guess it looks alittle like a golfer or a bull fighter if you look at it right. HAHA. I havent had a chance to clean it up yet. A NICE lockplate to a Springfield was found in this area last year so hopefully it will be something worth keeping.
