Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!!

some one screwed up "royally" selling you that for $80

in dec of 1788 charles the III king of spain died --- charles (carlos / carolus ) the IV took over --due to the lateness of the death in the year and the fact that new dies took some time to make and ship over to the new world mints --- the new king charles the IV let the mints use the dies with charles the III likeness with a altered charles the IV title name beside it --- with the mints to switch over when the new dies arrived later in 1789 -- that coin seems to be to me ---a 1789 carolus (charles) IV ** (the fourth) 2 ecusado gold coin

After all, gold IS where you find it. Nice job.

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!!

Hey Tuff, Just coincidentally I looked up junk on ebay early this morning and saw that lot in the "completed" section of eBay! Your risk paid off- looked like a cool lot- practically irresistable to a detectorist.

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!!

ah look closer *** its says CAROLUS * not CAROL : IIII the one shown above says CAROL IIII --see the us in carolus * it might be from early 1789 from the altered "charles the III dies --- the kings offical full name was used CAROLUS IV --- rather that the shortened CAROL IIII

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!!

Hey Mr. Tuff , Could you please give more detail about how you scored this stash , and
is the gold coin really gold , and what is it worth (melt ?) and "the rest of the story". thanks
Argentium.

Look,s good to me :icon_thumleft: it,s a real bargen.

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!!

I think I have to agree with Iron Patch that it is possibly a heavily plated Silver Reale. Weighing the coin would most likely be the all telling for determining Gold or not.
Not an expert on Spanish Gold, but a quick check shows none in that time frame with CAROLUS, but the Silver Reale's all were marked that way.

The only found difference on the changeover from Carolus III to the IV I found was that the mints were allowed to use the bust of III but added the extra I until the IV was used, but no mention of any gold coin with CAROLUS that I could find, just CAROL, before 1789 and after.

The token with the hole in it is as follows:

1792 Halfpenny Token of Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Obv: Sheild & arms of the City of Norwich with date 1792.
Rev: A man working a Loom.

Raity: Common.

PS. The coin above is a French coin of Louis XVI.

12 Deniers, most common date seems to be 1792.

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!! updated..

king charles the third --- 1782 carolus III was commonly used on on silver coins * it might be gold plated silver coin for jewelry use.- BECAUSE the coin weight is odd -- . SILVER COINS BY WEIGHT WERE 1/2 REAL WERE 1.69 GRAMS OF .812 % (FOR COLONY USE)-- 1 REAL WERE COMMONLY 3.38 GRAMS OF .833% -- AT 2 1/2 GRAMS ITS TO HEAVY FOR 1/2 REAL AND TOO LIGHT FOR A 1 REAL

GOLD COINS -- 1/2 ESCUDO WAS 1.69 GRAMS OF .901 % PURE GOLD --AND WERE MARKED CAROL :III -- THE 1 ESCUDO ALSO USED CAROL : III AND WAS .901 gold --3.38 grams

think you got a 1782 charles the III 1/2 real that has been heavily gold plated for jewelery use. -- nice find still.

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!! updated..

Thats funny you said that :laughing9: I was just thinking it looks like a plated copy. :icon_scratch: It Looks to shinny for being a 90% solid gold coin.... :dontknow: That just was my first thought. ??? Maybe someone just buffed it... :dontknow: I'd get it acid tested that should tell you if its solid gold or not.

Keep @ it and HH !! :D ;D

Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!! updated..

It is a One Real that has been plated. One Real diameters that are worn vary, but I measured three of mine, one 1783, 1792 and 1803 and one is 21.2mm, 20.9mm and the other is 19.7mm. One weighs 3.2grams. 2.9grams and the other 2.7grams. Depending on wear the diameter and weight are all plausable for it being the silver One Real that is plated.
