One can see the area below the 7 looks like plating.

I believe its plated too. In addition however I have to say this...is the coin a misstamp or highly irregular strike because i don't know if anyone has mentioned HOW FAR from the rim the letters are stamped. This is a milled coin not a cob..........so there shouldn't be that big of a variation between other milled coins of its type. I have several here and none are like this one.....

Could easily be a plated reale, have seen many.

My 2nd thought was it is a Silver coin plated with Gold. :icon_thumleft:

Still cool to own. :notworthy: :headbang:

I'm a bit confused :icon_scratch: not knowing much about reales :dontknow: but why would anyone Gold dip or plate a Silver coin :icon_scratch: and as the coin shows lots of wear on hight points, why hasn't the Gold worn away :icon_scratch:

I think its a highly worn silver 1 real coin -- heavily gold plated for use as a "treasure coin type" jewelry item in a holder on a chain --thats been removed from the holder

ok i took a few pics.. 1 with the coin on the scale. saying 2 grams, it looks to me... another with it by a wheatie, to see the rim width. and what looks like plating chipping is just tough tarnish. last four pics show the diff. took some time to get that black stuff off.. was on there good.. and cleaning this coin will not hurt it any way.. will try to get it tested on monday... thanks for all the help ;D and why plate a coin that is shot???? Re: looks like I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!! updated..

the main reason for me thinking its a well worn silver 1 real (* that was later in gold plated for jewelry use as a "treasure" coin placed in a holder on a necklace) gold platedis the wording used on it --- CAROLUS -- WAS USED ON SILVER COINS --- AND CAROL : WAS USED ON GOLD COINS --- so how do you get silver wording on a "gold" coin ? --easy when the silver coin got "heavy gold plated" for use as a jewelry item. -- since its well worn it has little collector value as a "silver coin" but as a gold plated "treasure coin" item on a necklace -- cha ching --its value just went up .

so i rubbed the edge of this coin on a rock to see if it was gold plated... still no trace of silver inside that i can see.. pressed hard nuff to start putting a lip on each side of the small flat spot i made on the rim ... hope all this snow does not keep the jeweler from being at the store tomorrow. that is when i will get the solid answer on this coin...

Re: I got a gold coin in a lot of junk coins i bought!!!!! updated..

went to the jeweler today. he said it does not look like it's gold plated :icon_scratch: i asked if the gold was real, and he said it's either gold or brass. but that was all he could tell me. but both my detectors say gold.. brass rings up differently.. the mystery continues.. MR TUFF

Nic the edge a mm or two. Will tell you if it's silver or not.

It just looks to me a worn Gold Coin :icon_scratch: like I said before can't see why anyone would Gold Plate a Silver coin :icon_scratch:
